My cat Waffles, who is an outdoor cat, won't open one of her eyes. It looks maybe a tad bit swollen but not very much. There isn't much discharge coming out of it either. She rubs at it a lot with her paw though. If she really wants to look at something she opens it just a tiny bit but for the most part she keeps it closed and just uses the other eye. I was able to open it a tiny bit last night but couldn't seen anything in it. I left both of our cats in the garage today so she wouldn't irritate it more outside. We have foxtails everywhere at our house so there could be one in her eye but I feel like there would be more discharge if there was one in there. If she hasn't improved by tomorrow I'll call the vet. Would giving her L-lysine in the meantime help?

Personally I would try to get her in to the vet today if you can. Of course I'm not a vet but if it's not all that swollen and she's not prone to herpes eye infections already I would be concerned about a scratch or foreign body in the eye. Usually when they keep the eye shut its because it's too painful to open it. When it comes to the eyes you really shouldn't mess around, things can get bad really fast.

Thank you both! I talked to my vet today and they agreed. I live too far out of town to go back and get her today but I will see how she is doing tonight and if there isn't any improvement I will take her to the vet tomorrow when I head to work. I wouldn't want it to get worse and cause a bigger problem.

Good news! I came home yesterday afternoon and it was a foxtail but it had worked itself out to the corner of her eye. I was able to gently pull it out. Her eye is back to normal now!
