Low cost spay/neuter?

Thread Starter
We are low on funds right now and cannot afford to spay/neuter the kitties at our vet. (It would be around $300-400 there.) I would have waited until they were 6-7 months old but now that I heard they can reach maturity much sooner I would rather have it done now for their sakes. My question is this: I was thinking of taking them to the local humane society to have it done, but I heard that they botched the surgery of a friend's cat, so now I'm scared. Should I take them there, find somewhere else, or wait for our vet to do it?

P.S. I live in Tucson. Does anyone around here have any experience with the local humane society?
