My cat is in the emergency hospital with his third urinary blockage in less than two weeks.  The vet said my cat has a tear in his urethra from the catheter.  He recommended PU surgery to prevent future blockages + he recommended surgery to remove stones from my cat's bladder.  The surgeon discussed his concerns with us today.  He said 15% of cats with urethral tears do not heal properly after PU surgery, and urine can leak into the abdomen or legs.  The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning and the surgeon will examine the tear then.  He will call us if he thinks the tear will not heal properly.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?  If the surgeon calls with bad news, I'm not sure if I should have my cat euthanized or continue with the surgery and see how he pulls through.  This is a very tough decision.

Is he in surgery NOW, or has it finished up?  How did it go?

I DO know of one cat here in TCS who had a tear and the urine leaked into his leg and it was all unknown until to actually leaked THRU his skin from the inside.  THAT was horrible, but in your guy's case, you know about the tear and are fixing it.

The surgeon decided to postpone the surgery.  He wants my cat's urethra to heal some on its own.  So, the surgery is scheduled for Thursday.

The surgery was successful.  He should be released from the hospital tomorrow.
