As a child, teen, or young adult, what is/was your favorite:  comic strip (from a newspaper), comic book, children's story, cartoon, book, TV series, or anime? your answer(s) can be any or all of these types/mediums, or another medium that i might have missed.

i'll go first. i remember enjoying the peanuts comic strip in the sunday newspaper as a child. and i loved the charlie brown/peanuts specials/movies that were on television occasionally.

i loved bugs bunny, the pink panther, and scooby doo (where are you?) cartoons as a child -- and i still seek them out on youtube to watch occasionally. one of my favorites is the bugs bunny cartoon with the (airplane) gremlins in it. in fact, when my snick is up on her cat tree looking around at the ceiling all wide-eyed and alert, i'll ask her 'are those ceiling gremlins bothering you again?'.

as a young adult, i loved the James Herriot books. i read many of them, but not all of them. i've sometimes thought of re-reading those books, and then continuing on to read the rest of his books.

i'd have to say that 'I Love Lucy' was my favorite TV show. i've more than likely seen every episode, more than once.

this doesn't fit into any of the above types, but i've loved the movie, 'The Sound of Music' since i was a child, and i've watched the movie countless times.

how about you?

ahhhh, yes! The Far Side -- really good newspaper comic!

i remember Grimm's Fairy Tales -- my father and i had to discuss my choice of these books (complete collection, in two paperback books), because he felt they were 'too old for me'. i probably wasn't older than 7 or 8 years old then. we ended up agreeing on them, and i enjoyed reading those books. i'd never read any of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books, but i did locate a website where both grimm's and lang's fairy tales are free to read -- as well as other fairy tales, folktales, fables and stories (http://www.worldoftales.com/index.html). very interesting website, and looks like it'll make some good reading for me.

yes, The Jetsons! i thought of another cartoon i really enjoyed as a child -- Johnny Quest.

Comic book:  Little LuLu

Comic strip:   Archie, I think that was the name of it.
i didn't remember Little Lulu, so i searched online for more info about the comic book and comic strip. i read that the creator Marge Henderson Buell debuted Little Lulu on january 5, 1935 in a panel on The Saturday Evening Post's back page in which flower girl Lulu is munching on bananas in a wedding procession as the 'hapless' bride and groom slide helplessly on her discarded peels.

yes, Archie was the name of the comic strip.

Calvin & Hobbes, always funny!

oh yes, i definitely prefer the pre Scrappy Doo episodes of Scooby Doo.

i enjoyed watching the TV series MASH too.

if i'm not mistaken, there are those who only consider animations from Japan as true anime vs those who define anime as a Japanese-disseminated animation style (with certain characteristics). either way, i like Hello Kitty too.

Favorite comic strips were Beetle Bailey and I believe it was called Blondie.  The main characters were Dagwood and Blondie.

My favorite TV cartoons were Yogi Bear, Yogi was always after a picnic basket and the Roadrunner cartoons, the coyote was always after the roadrunner.

Favorite regular TV series as a child was The Lucy Show, Hazel and Dennis the Menace.

I never really got into comic books.

ahhh, yes -- Blondie! doing an internet search, i read that Blondie is still being written and has remained popular -- appearing in over 2000 newspapers and in 47 countries. Blondie is also now available through King Features' DailyINK  service -- but there's an annual fee for that. then there's the Dagwood sandwich, named after Dagwood Bumstead of the comic strip Blondie --

yogi bear always claimed he was 'smarter than the av-er-age bear'. i also loved when yogi said, 'pic-a-nic baskets'.

yes, i loved the Roadrunner cartoons too. Wile E Coyote always ended up getting squashed with a boulder or blown up or such, because the complex contraptions he created and the elaborate plans he made to catch the roadrunner backfired on him. i also loved the little phrases in parenthesis at the beginning of the Roadrunner cartoons under the names 'Coyote' and 'Road-runner', like in these episodes --

Hmmm, let me see.....

newspaper comic:  Peanuts (Now, I've found myself following Stone Soup; I'd like to see if Val and Phil really do manage to get married
) And I've been a Calvin and Hobbes fan for years and years. Our son loved C & H, too, and we bought him all kinds of C & H books.

comic book:   Fantastic Four (been collecting old ones now for years)

children's story:  Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass

cartoon: I used to really like Jonny Quest

book:  I never really had a favorite book; I was such an avid reader that I'd read pretty much anything. Still do. I guess maybe A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Read many of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books.

tv series: We didn't watch a lot of tv at home. I do remember watching Peyton Place, Perry Mason, etc. with Grandma. She watched her afternoon soaps, too. I remember watching Bewitched and such. But nothing rings a bell as a favorite show.

anime: Wasn't around when I was a kid and I really don't like much of it now

Thanks for looking that up.  It was so long ago that these comic books were out that I wasn't sure Archie was the right name.  Wow Little LuLu is older than me.  I really enjoyed reading the comic books as a kid.

My favorite cartoon now is Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. It's great! (it's cancelled now so no new episodes but I'm pretty sure they have re-runs and of course you can always find a show somewhere). But it wasn't on when I was a kid. I don't actually remember a favorite but maybe Tiny Toons. Otherwise, we were kind of stuck with whatever was on so we just watched whatever they played, LOL. We grew up overseas and we only had one channel in English so not a lot of choices.

I read Archie comics all the time. Looking back, I don't think those portrayed healthy gender relationships, or even healthy, normal family and interpersonal relationships. And because that was the only exposure to American teen culture I had, I don't think that helped my social development at all :tongue2:.

I never liked Anime. My brother did, and my friends. I just never understood the appeal. My brother liked Dragon Ball Z and my friends liked Sailor Moon. I liked the little Sanrio characters that Japanese manufacturers put on everything from notebooks to shoes, but they didn't actually have cartoons about them, as far as I know.

I read just everything when I was a kid. I would go to the library and take as many books as I was allowed at a time (I think 10?), then read them all quickly, return them, and take the next 10 books off the shelf. I didn't really have favorites at the time but now I've decided I like Kate Seredy books best (The Chestry Oak, The Good Master, etc.). I also have a collection of all the Newbery Award winners but I haven't been keeping up lately.

I don't remember many specific TV shows I liked either. Again, we only had one channel so they only sent the highest-rated shows and we had to watch whatever was on. I do remember liking Quantum Leap, Law & Order, and Star Trek DS9 but I was older then, not a little kid. I guess I remember the usual '90s shows like Full House and Alf but I don't think I was really into them.

For newspaper comics, I like Calvin & Hobbs and The Far Side for old ones, of the currently-running comics I like Zits best. And Pearls Before Swine, LOL. That guy is one sick puppy.

oh, i remember that my niece had the Goodnight Moon children's story!

your mention of Looney Tunes made me think of Merrie Melodies cartoons, and what the difference or relation might be between the two. so i did an internet search and got my answer! very interesting (and funny) article too -- http://www.straightdope.com/columns...nce-between-a-looney-tune-and-a-merrie-melody .

another fan of Jonny Quest! i loved that cartoon, just adventures and excitement and dangers they made it through. another really cool cartoon was Thunderbirds, which used a combination of marionette puppetry and scale-model special effects sequences in a filming technique called "supermarionation'. that was a really neat cartoon. but then, i used to love the claymation movies too.
