@Freedom, I have just caught up with this thread.  Congratulations on your success so far.

Your aunt's cat is beautiful.  I am sure she is a Turkish Van, and could well be a purebred. If you are unfamiliar with the breed, there's plenty of information on the internet about them. I have always admired them, and fostered one last year.

I would have advised to stick with the food she was used to until she'd settled more.  You may have gone past this point now, but perhaps giving her some familiar food for a little while, in the bowl she was used to if you have it, might be reassuring for her.  So much change in an old cat is very stressful, and can definitely bring on serious illness.  She will also be susceptible to cat flu if she has ever had it in her life, as it can reoccur in stressful periods.

I'd highly recommend the Feliway diffuser and/or spray to help her settle.

Another thing you might consider is a gentle laxative. I used one (which came in a tube) provided by a vet. It doesn't give them the runs. It simply is a concentrated roughage that helps move things along, and it is tasty so they usually accept or even enjoy it. Perhaps you could ask the vet about it.

All the best with the wonderful job you're doing!

And you may just happen to come across a single person who no animals who would love her for company.  Especially at her age, she sounds like a cat that would do best in a quiet household with no cat spats,

I am not familiar with the breed; most of my cats have been basic "American short hair."  I've just read through 2 articles online, rather quickly.  WOW yes that does sound like Emma!  I was told she loves to have the bathtub faucet trickle -- haven't been able to do that with her yet.  Not sure as I also read the Van does not mat and Emma definitely had a few mats.  I was told she needed grooming to remove her winter coat; didn't believe that as it was June already.  Having read the 2 articles, now I think that may also fit Emma.

So, thanks very much for this I will definitely read up on the breed to get a better idea on how to care for Emma.

Just heard back from my cousins, they could not locate ANY of her paperwork amongst their mom's things.  She would have had all her shots at the MSPCA prior to them adopting her out; my Aunt got her in Oct 2013.  But, with no paperwork, most likely I am going to have to get her shots started all over again.  Most vets I know will insist on that as part of the initial check up.  Given her age, I expect they will also want to run blood work.

They probably will want to do bloodwork.  If that's the case, ask them to do a titer on her before giving her shots to test to see if she needs any shots.  Also, I'd wait until she's fully settled before getting her to the vet.  It's only been 2 years since she's had shots, so she's not really overdue for shots.  At her age, you may opt to not even give her any shots.  Not sure if you want to invest in one, but a water fountain might be good for her and something she'd enjoy as well as the dripping faucet in the tub.

Great suggestion about waiting for shots, and seeing if she really needs them. Love the water fountain idea for her too! :)

@Freedom, I also think that's great advice to hold off on the immunisation shots.  Just wondering, though, if you could phone a couple of the vets closest to where you aunt lived to see if they may have cared for her.  It would be good to have a little history on her, albeit recent.

I do hope you enjoy her. Turkish Vans are a delight, and yes, they usually love water. Some even enjoy a swim.

Hoping she settles and that you really enjoy her. Also hoping you might come across an ideal owner for her so she won't have any competition.

You're doing a great job!

Thanks.  Auntie adopted Emma in Oct 2013, and never had her in to a vet.  I keep intending to phone the MSPCA to see if they have the adoption records, then I get busy with other stuff, lol.

Great idea to phone the MSPCA. They surely would have something on her.

How is she going now, @Freedom?  Any more progress?

Stopped in at the MSPCA today, got her records.  One year rabies vaccine administered April 2013, so long overdue.  I also learned:  "Rascal" was a surrender because she was peeing everywhere.  MSPCA vet learned she had a UTI; 10 days on meds and she was all better.  Up for adoption as of April 2013, my Aunt got her in Oct, 2013.

Yes Emma is looking much better, more relaxed.  I can work in the 'home office' where she is and she remains in  the house and observes.  I'll talk to her, stop and give her some petting, all fine.  And her coat is looking better as well.

Good you got her records - now you know. So glad to hear she continues to adjust. Took her 6 months to get adopted. Always interesting to know some background. Wonder who had her prior to the shelter?

She was 10 years old at that point.  Senior kitties take longer to be adopted.

All this month, senior kitties are free at the MSPCA.  They are full, full, full.  And while I was there, 2 young girls came in to surrender a black cat, adult.  I heard the associate tell them it would be a half hour wait as they get a LOT of surrenders 4th of July time.

I'd say Emma is settled and adjusted just fine.

Last evening, neighborhood fireworks sent her over 2 baby gates and under the bed in that room.  Once all had quieted down, back she went, over 2 baby gates to HER room and HER cat tree ha haaa.  Well done, Emma!
