Hello everyone,

My 8 month old kitty weighs about 13 pounds. I have tried to limit his food intake and his portions but he continues to gain weight. He is a beast! He is very active, he is allowed to go outside a couple of times a week supervised and loves to climb fences and explore. He also plays and runs all day chasing the other cat. I also notice that his appetite is out of control. I have to assume that this due to being neutered as I have an 11 month old who has not been neutered and is a perfect, healthy weight with a normal appetite. I read on the Catinfo.com that for weight loss, I need to look for high protein, low fat diets, though this has been a rather difficult task. Trying to do the calculations myself has been even worse!

Anybody know of any high protein, low fat, and possibly low carb wet foods with decent or better yet, great ingredients?

Thank you to all in advance.

Welcome to the Cat Site, @BDelsol!

Did you check the food chart on Catinfo.org? It lists lots of foods with data on protein, fats, and carbs: it's a little overwhelming because it contains so many foods but at least it's easy to compare brands and flavors.

One brand that I might suggest is Weruva, which is generally shredded foods; Weruva's usually sold at independent pet food stores. Our cats eat several of their canned Cats in the Kitchen foods: Fowl Ball, Chicken Frick a Zee, and Double Dip. Those foods are all meat, with low carbs and moderate fats; the calories are relatively low so it's hard to say if your cat will feel satiated. Also based on Dr. Pierson's site, I'd definitely go for the low-carb foods.

Have you already spoken with your cat's vet about the cat's weight gain? I'm not very experienced with kittens (and our current cats came to us as totally underfed 10-month-old kittens, totally throwing off all my perceptions of kitten appetites!) but your cat's situation sounds a little unusual. In any case, good luck: I hope you find some foods that will keep your kitty happy and not gaining more weight!

Are you sure he needs to lose weight? An 8 month old kitten is still growing, and with him being very active too, he'll need a lot of food. That's normal. 13 lbs could be a perfectly healthy weight, depending on his frame.

I just think it's risky to limit portions or feed very low fat foods to a young, active, growing kitten.
