Dear Cat Site friends,

I'm writing your from Ecuador, South America.

This is about a 2 month old kitten I recently adopted. She received her first distemper shot (Felocell 3 Vaccine manufactured by Pfizer Inc., - live virus vaccine) on May 27th and 3 days later she developed what I believe is the "limping kitten syndrome" with very high fever (over 104). On June 1st she was admitted to the hospital with high fever, lameness -alternating paws-, pain on her paws and constant trembling.  The vet gave her a shot of Convenia which I understand provides up to 14 days of antibiotic therapy and he kept her overnight. She was able to overcome this in 4 days with supportive care and Convenia.

Her distemper booster shot is coming up next week. Should I be worried? I don't want her to get sick again, it was very hard for me and my family to see her suffering so much.  My cat's veterinarian is not very cooperative. Apparently he never had a kitten reacting badly to a distemper shot, and even though all the evidence and timing suggests very strongly that my cat suffered from the limping kitten syndrome -which he has never heard of-, he keeps saying that it was only a temporary infection not related to the vaccine. I wonder if my kitten should receive the booster shot and if so, if she should be pre-medicated to avoid these symptoms to come back. My vet hesitates about applying more antibiotics to my cat because he thinks she's too young and it might damage her kidneys.

Please advise if you think pre-medication is needed and what medicine she should receive. Does it need to be applied the same day of the booster shot or a few days in advance?

I would be SO THANKFUL if you could guide me through this as talking to my Ecuadorian vet is like trying to talk to a brick wall.

Looking forward to read your comments,

Mimi

If i had a cat with a bad reaction to a live virus vaccine i would insist on a killed version for the next one or I would skip it.

Thank you SO much for your input Stephen. I will look into that, hopefully in Ecuador they will have the killed virus version of the vaccine. I will probably go to a different vet for a second opinion as the vet who treats my cat is kind of stubborn and every time I tell him about the Limping Kitten Syndrome he looks at me like if I were telling him a science fiction story and even mocks me, making me feel like a total idiot. Evidently the guy believes that this syndrome doesn't exist or maybe he has never read about it. I'm not willing to take any chances and compromise my cat's health.

I appreciate your advice, I'm looking forward to receive more comments from members, maybe people who just went through the same experience?

Warm regards from Ecuador. Thank you!

Hi there,

And greetings from the USA :-)

Happy to help, not much I can offer but here is an article on the subject that links the vaccine to limping in kittens, a connection to the Calici virus portion of the vaccine and the connection of that illness to joint pain, and a previous thread on TCS and the subject.
