Wednesday June 17th my fiancé found an orphan kitten under the porch. The day before (Tuesday) around 3pm he woke up hearing a cry (he works 3rds) and just thought it was a bird and thought nothing of it...But come wednesday morning, pouring rain, he heard a kitten crying and pulled her from the mud. She was the only one.
****

Now, we've been doing our best at this newborn kitten care...Wednesday we started feeding every 2 hours (we estimate kitten is maybe 1 week old) and she struggled at first but a feeding around 11pm that night, she took the bottle like a champ! And continues to do very well! As well as urinating each time, a pale yellow.

Kitty seems to be doing really well. She's getting bigger/filling out and were spacing her meals out every 3-4 hours using a powdered formula. Brand bought from Walmart on short notice.

Here are my areas of concern because I'm sitting here at work while my fiancé tends to her. We have a vet appointment today at 5:00. And I'm nervous!!

•she has not pooped yet and it's day 3. I stimulate and massage and nothing.. I'm hoping vet will get her to poo for us.

•she has fleas, not a lot I noticed but I've seen 1 or 2 crawling and she has some black gritty spots in her fur that I think are flea eggs.

•she also has small yellow-like eggs in her ears. Not deep inside but just the outer edges. I spent a lot of time last night picking them out and destroying them.

Will the vet be able to help her with these? Fleas? Possibly ear mites? I haven't tried bathing her yet because I want the vets opinion first...I've just try to pick off what I see:/

I'm so nervous for the vet because other than what I've written she's doing amazingly well...she even purrs after every feeding now!

She's been so much work, and my fiancé and I have no pets...we had intended on actually getting a puppy after the wedding but this lil kitty had found her way to us and we're obsessed! We want her to continue to thrive and do well.

I just hope the vet can treat her...I don't want bad news. I've never dealt with such a fragile kitten before...I've always had elderly cats in my life.. Nothing this young or small.

Just venting/looking for hope that the vet can treat her.

Thanks for reading! I've gotten a lot of great advice from this site so I thank you all.

Have you tried the "put her bottom under warm running water while gently tapping her bottom" trick? When is the vet visit?

God bless you for saving this kitten!!!! Any way you can post a picture?

What a cutie pie! I love black cats but mine have always been adults so pictures of black kittens always get to me. It's wonderful you took her in and are taking such good care of her. Hope the vet appointment goes well.

What a precious little button!

Sounds like you guys are doing a bang-up job with her! :).

Be careful at the vet. As Stefan said, many have little experience with young kittens. She is too young for any vaccines or worm medicine or flea medicine!!!

Ear mites can be cleaned with an ear swab soaked in cotton. Fleas are best picked off with a flea comb (available at Walmart).

She will poop eventually. They do not poop after every single feeding. Try adding a couple of drops of olive oil to her bottle at each feeding. This should help her to pass some stool eventually. Her system is getting used to the formula rather than mom's milk, and she may experience some constipation.

Be sure she is warm at all times with a heating pad set on low under her blanket. She cannot regulate her own body temperature for the first three weeks. Put a little stuffed toy in with her to cuddle with.

I am not sure you absolutely need the vet appointment quite yet since she is too young for just about anything and appears to be doing well other than no poop yet.

Keep us updated! :)

Oops! Typo! Ear swab soaked in alcohol!

It will kill the mites! Thank you!

@sarthur2  What should the cotton swab be soaked with?

Another tip is a little of the same oil, olive oil for example.,  Just a drop or two.  The oil spreads around the skin inside the ear, and suffocates the mites.

This home remedy wont work against severe mites infections, but works nicely against the light ones.   And is completely harmless.

Be careful not to press out the alcohol, if you use that trick.  Alcohohol may wander into the blood through the thin skin in the ears.   I know some alcohol based prepareates are sometimes administered by the foot soles, for example.

Surely no big deal with adult cats, but I personally wouldnt try this on a little kitten.  Unless someone experienced with this assured me its entirely OK and harmless!    :)
