I have no idea whether this is the right section to post under or not. Before speaking about the actual problem, I feel it would be appropriate to speak about the circumstances.

It began on Tuesday night when my older sister who drove an hour away to let my mother and I to temporarily take care of her 4-5 week old kitten. She did this without any form of warning, no texts, no calls, nothing. Since she drove so far away we had no choice but to take the kitten in. She promised to come back for the kitten by Thursday, or so I thought, only to postpone it to Friday, then to Sunday, and now she's not sure when... This isn't good because we aren't in the best financial state, we were lucky enough to receive a formula bottle along with powder from her. However, if I'm correct, this is around the weaning period for a kitten, we can't afford food for the kitten and now I don't know  what to do. Please help.

I'm sorry you are stuck in this situation. If you can't afford her maybe find someone who can afford to take care of her? I wouldn't take her to the shelter but maybe ask a vet clinic or a local cat/kitten rescue for help. :)

So you have formula and a bottle to feed the kitten for right now?

And yes, kittens begin to wean right around 4 to 5 weeks of age. They need kitten chow and wet food, and some continue with the bottle along with the solid food for a few more weeks. They also need to begin to use the litter box at this age too.

I have to agree with miagi's_mommy miagi's_mommy , that if you cannot afford food and litter for the kitten, you will need to find a no-kill or rescue shelter - not animal control - that will take her, or at least give you some supplies.

Can you make some phone calls tomorrow to see what arrangements can be made for her care?

And continue to give the kitten her bottle with the formula in the meantime. Sorry your sister left you in the lurch, but thank you for being concerned enough to care for the kitten and do the right thing for her. :)

I wish it were easy, being merely a thirteen year old child, it's hard to get anyone to listen to me since I'm usually classified as the inexperienced one.

Im not sure if you have a last chance rescue where you are at or not, but i recently took in a stray who became pregnant and im a similar less that perfect financial situation. I emailed last chance rescue my situation and withing a couple days i got the most amazing response offering help to properly feed and care for the kittens and the mom including medical treatment, as well as a gurenteed spot on their website for preadoption and so fourth. I would recomend emailing as many no kill shelters and rescues as you can within a like 40 mile radius of you, and maybe you will get lucky and find someone who has all the proper means to assist. I wish you the best of luck

I recommended this to my mother, she refuses to listen..

I need to bring this into my own hands. Hopefully all goes well.

My kitten (4-5) weeks of age, let out feces a minute after eating... what does this tell me?

Kittens frequently go poo right after eating. Was it of normal consistency?
It sounds like your kitten just needed to go poo! Kitten poo is very soft when they are still on the bottle and only getting formula. :)

Do you have someone at school you could trust to try to help you? Teacher, counselor. Perhaps there is someone in school who would love a kitten. Is there a bulletin board you could post on?

You can also call vets' offices and ask them if they know of anyone. They usually let you put up pictures of the kitten and a phone number.  Also do contact the local animal shelter - I volunteer at one, and kittens are usually adopted quickly .

My local shelter (I live in Sacramento, California) has a pet food bank where low income residents can pick up free food for their pets. There may be something like that in your area.
