So I had posted about this about a week ago and the hair loss has continued. The vet said ringworm we treated him for ring worm test came back negative vet said mites we treated for mites and used special shampoo, test came back no mites. At a loss now anyone have any ideas what I could do to help figure out what's wrong and help get hair to grow back. I'm waiting for blood tests and a few other skin tests to come back but I'm not sure how long it will take.

My 8 week old kitten has been having a lot of hair loss. The vet said it was ringworm treated him for that test came back negative then they said mites so we treated him for mites and used a special shampoo as well then test came back not mites. I'm at a loss as to what could cause this so if anyone has any ideas as to what could possibly be causing this and any ideas as to what I could do to help his hair grow back I'd really appreciate it. I am waiting for some blood and more skin tests to come back but so far everything has been negative

Baffling, since your vet treated him for the two most common causes of hair loss - ringworm and mites.

At what point did the hair loss first begin to show up? What was he eating before you adopted him, and what are you feeding him now? How long have you had him?

Just wondering if he is allergic to an ingredient in some of his food, especially since his sister is not suffering hair loss.

It started about a week after adoption. They gave me the bag of kitten food they were giving them because I adopted both of the only kittens at the shelter. Monday made it 2 weeks that I have had them so it's been almost 3 weeks now

Its the Purina kitten food in a yellow bag. Not my first choice in kitten food but I didn't want to wean them onto a better food until that was almost gone I was planning on starting them on natural choice kitten food next week but now I'm nervous to start him on anything new because I do not know how he will react. In the picture you can't really see it but the hair loss has spread down to both of his front shoulders and onto the front of his neck and the skin is also peeling on his back where the hair loss started.

Poor little guy. So the hair loss started about 2 weeks ago then. Eating same food. Just dry food? No wet food at all?

Was he with his mother before you adopted him?

Yeah I've just been giving them dry food the shelter said that was all they were giving the babies. From my understanding they were found abandoned by someone's work and so they turned them in so I'm not sure if they were with the mom or not I considered getting kitten formula but the vet said that they didn't need it at this point

I was wondering if he might be feeling stressed about the change in his environment. Cats can be very sensitive. Does he snuggle and play with his sister?

You said he's only 8 weeks old. That's really young, and you got him when he was only about 5 weeks old. I'm going to suggest that you do get some kitten formula, and mix it up and offer it to both kittens to drink. It's packed with vitamins and minerals that are good for them, and it certainly would give him a boost. I keep my kittens on it for the first few months.

Also, kittens need wet food in addition to dry food. I use Fancy Feast classic and pate. Easy for them to eat.

Mine also love it when I pour the kitten milk over the kitten chow. It makes it softer for their little baby teeth.

I'm suggesting the kitten formula and wet food because they need it, and because it may help his coat. Kittens also need to eat 4 to 6 times a day - a few teaspoons of wet food at each feeding, and a dish of milk a couple of times a day. Always leave dry food and water for them to munch on as well. I sure don't think adding to his diet could hurt.

Do they have some soft toys and balls to play with? Good food and toys and lots of interaction with you may help if he's experiencing stress. It's worth a try! :)

They play together all the time and he sleeps on top of her and my min pin all the time too. I do leave the food and water out cause I read free feeding them is what's best for development but I didn't think about wet food I'll have to go get some of that and the formula tomorrow morning. I also did get them some toys to play with but they prefer my crochet yarn balls more lol so I roll my scraps into balls and gave them those to play with too. I had thought it could be stress related since he is the only one losing fur and he took a little more time to adjust to the house and dogs. He hid the first 2 days I had him but his sister was all over the place chasing the dogs. Is there anything I can do to help with the stress?

I think the wet food and kitten milk will help, and plenty of love and interaction with you.

The yarn balls sound like great fun! Does he have a place to hide away to sleep? Like under your bed and away from the dogs if he needs a break? Do the dogs bother him at all?

He may just need more time to settle in, and any stress he's feeling will hopefully diminish once he hits his comfort zone. The food and milk should help his coat too.

Beyond that, let's see if his tests at the vet turn up anything.

And I'd like to hear tomorrow how he likes his wet food and milk. :)

I will definitely keep you up dated. I did get a little cat carrier that he can get into with a little bed and I have it put in a corner in my room that the dogs cat easily get to but the cats can and he does go under my bed a lot too. The dogs only really mess with him when he is playing but he usually interacts with the dogs at that point and then min pin and him snuggle a lot. But my lab does try to play all the time with him even when he is hiding in my hair so I will shoo the lab away then cause he normally hides in my hair when he is clearly overwhelmed.

You may have put your finger on something. He may feel stressed by your lab, and at times feel completely overwhelmed. It may or may not be causing his fur loss.

Regardless, are you able to give your kitten time to play some each day for a period of time without the lab in the room? That might help a little too! :)

I do have my dogs outside for a good portion of the day because if I don't they are overly excited so they need to burn off energy, unless it gets far to hot outside I try to play with them outside at lest 3 times a day for an hour span and then I will leave them there for a short time and come play with the kitties until they get tired. I had thought the lab might be causing stress for Tom and that could have caused the hair loss

I also want to suggest a Felliway diffuser. Pet stores usually carry them, and they can be ordered on Amazon as well. If you plug it in the room where he spends most of his time, it may help to calm his stress with the scent that it releases.

Well, we don't know for sure what is causing the hair loss, but these are some of the things that are good for your kitten right now anyway, and with luck and time, we'll hope he gets better. When do you expect to hear back from your vet on the other tests?

And it sure sounds like you are doing a great job managing all of this! :)

The vet said to expect another 7-10 days for all of the other tests to come back so I'm thinking about a week I should know. I wish they were faster though, I am really trying to figure out how to best manage his hair loss but for a first time kitten mommy I'm kind of lost with all of it. My vet sees us more than my own doctor because if I notice any thing new I am right back in there having him checked again. Yesterday he slept a little more than normal so I took him back in. I think I'm being overly concerned but I'd rather be safe and make sure it's not anything to worry about.

Better safe than sorry is a good approach. In general, kittens nap a lot. If they are up longer than usual, play harder than usual, or are experiencing a growth spurt, they may sleep more. My kittens have really long naps in the afternoons and early evenings, but their schedule has changed as they've grown. It's completely different now at 3 months old than it was a few weeks ago. It's perfectly normal if he catches a fee extra winks sometimes! :).

While you're waiting on test results you can try some of the things we've discussed. I'll check back with you tomorrow! :)
