Hi everyone,

Three weeks ago my cat, Minette, was throwing up blood. I knew it wasn't a good sign, but her blood work was okay and she wasn't dehydrated, so the vet gave her some pills to clear up the vomiting.  Well, that didn't work and then she stopped eating and drinking. I knew things were bad at that point. I brought her in last week and she was dehydrated and received an x-ray which showed thickening of the stomach lining.  She received IV treatment and was sent for an ultrasound where the ultimate diagnosis was lymphoma (stomach cancer).  The vet said this type of cancer was operable.  He gave her some prednisone (steroids) and subcutaneous fluids to help her eat and stay hydrated while we wait to speak to the oncologist. He said that the steroids are really just a bandaid. All of the research online says that if we did chemo, her chances could be between 2.7 months up to 17 months of survival.  Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has heard of what to do about this cancer or is this just the end and I should help her along.  She is only 8, but it is possible she is older, because we rescued her at 3, however, who knows really how old she was.  I just need some guidance to help me make this decision.  What would you do?

I just want to clear something up.  The type of cancer is NOT operable.  That makes a big difference.

Thank you for your reply.  Problem is, only thing she will eat.  She is usually a great eater. I agree that chemo will just make her ill.  I am finding out today whether it is small-cell lymphoma or the high-grade type.  Thanks for the advice!

I disagree about chemo making things worse. Most cats actually tolerate chemo pretty well with minimal side effects. I work as a vet tech and have seen many cats live past what was expected because of the use of chemo drugs. Your best bet is first to determine if it's large cell or small cell and then consult with an oncologist. I know there are many knowledge people on here who've been through lymphoma and the treatments so hopefully someone else will chime in. Hang in there and please keep us updated on her progress.
