one of my 9 wk old bsh kitten is having watery diarrhea atm after I fed spoiled KMR to him

it was really hard to tell the can was spoiled until i opened a diff can of KMR and tasted powder from both can myself

the spoiled one smell like normal however tasted a little bitter than the normal one where it should have a sweet taste

I tried using metronidazole , probiotics seperately and still doesn't help

atm i'm giving him albon ( sulfamethoxazole/ trimethoprim) and still having a watery diarrhea

the only imrprovement after feeding him albon is the color change of his stool from yellow to brown

i'm trying to figure out what in the spoiled powdered milk is causing his diarrhea

Vet from my area cannot be trusted , some do not have enough knowledge and others have their own agenda so i'm on my own

anyone have experience with feeding spoiled KMR or other kinda powdered milk to cat?

wondering if it's mold that is causing diarrhea and why wouldn't probiotics work.

Generally, 9 week old kittens with bad diarrhea probably have a parasite, giardia or coccidia being the most common ones, and the drugs you're using are appropriate.  I've never heard of KMR being to blame for this, and a 9 week old kitten should be on solid food by now.  How long has the kitten been on treatment?

i'm pretty sure spoiled KMR gave him diarrhea cuz there were 3 other 5 wk old kitten also got diarrhea after having milk from same can of KMR, just not as serious and got back to normal after giving them metronidazole. beside i compared 2 diff cans of KMR from the same lot and they tasted different. KMR had some serious issues back in 2009 - 2011 and many suffered. it's not hard to find info bout that online.

the 9 wk old kitten was having bad diarrhea during his first 6 wks cuz of parasite( most likely be TF) and he didn't have enough immunity to fight it off( his mother not willing to feed him during his first 3 days and we ran outta colostrum supply), we managed to keep him alive with meds and he was getting back to normal however at 8 wks he only weight 700g and we decided not to give him solid food yet since his digestive tract just got back to normal.

i've been giving him medication for 4 days in total. normally if the med works after feeding the med twice it would show some improvement, this time i tried metronidazole first and after giving him 4 times the med situation got worse and i stopped giving him metronidazole so basically sure not giardia , instead probiotic was given and his stool got even worse with it  . at the very beginning he poo every 10-12 hrs then it became 4-5 hrs each time, now with albon the duration is back to a longer period like 8-9 hrs between poo. i'm feeding the kitten albon at maxium dosage (100mg/kg) every 24 hrs and gonna give him the 3rd dose in 12 hrs or so. thinking bout giving him fenbendazole and detox carbon however not sure if it's wise to give him more that may worsen his condition.

the thing that puzzle me is the other 3 kitten recovered after taking metronidazole( although they have much less KMR compare to the 9 wk kitten).i wonder if something else is also causing the prob

I really think he should see a Vet, a kitten that small will dehydrate quickly. They can give him sub-q fluids if needed and meds to settle his tummy. In the mean time, I've heard of others using goat milk to feed kittens. I am wondering, could you try feeding him some canned cat food or finely shredded plain cooked chicken? At nine weeks old, he should be weaned by now.

He probably became sicker than the others because he is so much smaller and not eating solids yet. Additionally, the medley of medicines you have given him may also have upset his system.

I suggest that you attempt to feed him solid food mushed up with some formula that is not expired. Syringe it into his cheek to get some food into him. If he likes it, see if he will lick it from your finger. If he does, show him the dish.

The sooner you get this little fellow eating solids, the quicker he will gain weight and grow, and his immunity will be stronger. He really needs to transition now.

It sounds like the little guy has had a lot of medication in his short life. I hope he begins to eat soon and the diarrhea completely goes away.

Basically i haven't met any vet in my area that can be trusted in treating kittens' diarrhea. Many of my kittens died after being treated by Vets in my area, later on i figured either they lack the knowledge to treat yonug kitten thats below 10 wks of age or they wanna keep my kittens sick for more money ( vet business here is complicated as large corporations control many sectors including many of the vets). So many times i tried to ask for help from vet to treat very young kittens they turned their backs on me saying kitten was too small there's nothing they could do to help.i have the sub-q fluid kit and can give him that if needed and i'm keeping close eyes on him and see if he's dehydrated. Goat milk is good for nutrition however for kittens with diarrhea it will worsen the situation, thats one of the reason i'm using KMR cuz it's less likely to cause diarrhea. I would love to feed him solid food if his digestive tract is in normal shape, was planning to give him gerber during this wk then slowly switch to cooked chicken before his diarrhea occured.

now i'm not sure it's a good idea to give him gerber instead of KMR since it will be harder to digest and less liquid to keep him hydrated

zhakur, are you in US? I am assuming you are not because you weigh the kitten in grams. Would it be alright to stop the medication you are giving, keep giving the probiotics and see how he does? Was he having any loose stools before you fed the KMR?

actually i had no choice cuz his digestive system may not be able to digest solid food with so much med being fed in the past. if i could i would never gave him so much med however when he was less than 6 wks old everytime i stop the med his diarrhea came back with lotsa blood in it, it was more than lucky to keep him alive at that moment. actually it's a good thought to mix other food with formula maybe half solid like gerber would give him more nutrition. Btw KMR i gave him wasn't expired, acutally i got it from distrubutor 3 wks ago and the expiry date for the can was dec 2016. his appetite is actually good, he can take 30ml of KMR each time i feed him so at least he's not starving to death atm. btw thx for the ideas ppl

The Gerber turkey or chicken is easy on the tummy and easy to digest. I believe it has good moisture in it too. I do not think it would be harmful at all. A good way to start his transition to solids, actually. I use it for all of my kittens, and sick and elderly cats with great success.

nope i'm from hong kong. actually i stopped giving him meds since he was 6 wks old. His stool was back to normal for at least 10 days until i fed him the spoiled KMR ( I was simply giving him a new can the old can was done, he was having KMR all that time and i gave him 200+ml of KMR per day without any problem) now his diarrhea came back at first i gave him med (metronidazole), then decided to stop the med and see if probiotics could help him, unfortunately after i fed him probiotics his condition actually worsen ( pretty weird huh) and his watery diarrhea changed color from brown to yellow. after that i stopped the probiotics and gave him another med ( albon)

fenbendazole also known as Panacur is a great medication.  There are no vets in Hong Kong that you can trust?  Really?

I'm very sorry for both of you but I don't think this is something you can treat at home. He may have a major issue and the sooner its treated, the better.
