Dark spot in the mouth

I just noticed my big boy Apollo (around 2 years old) has a dark patch inside his mouth. I haven't noticed it before, but then again, I usually don't look in there and let the vet handle the teeth cleaning. He doesn't seem to be in any pain or licking his lips or anything like it bothers him. I know dogs have black spots inside their mouths - is this the case with cats too?

It could just be pigmentation if cat has black in it

Both my black dogs have black spots on their body and in their mouths.

One of my cats got an infection in his mouth from an embedded foxtail or little stick or something, but it just happened to be over an area that was naturally black (he's a tuxedo).  I had never noticed the black area before and thought the black spot was part of the infection, and that he had a horrible abscess.  Boy was I embarrassed when the vet pointed out that it was just part of his natural pigmentation.      

(Fortunately the infection got cleared up with a few days of antibiotics). 

Thank you! Apollo is a fluffy, light orange kitty - not a spot of black on him except in his mouth, but if it's just pigmentation, I won't worry about it. I'll keep watching him carefully though just in case!

If he has no black I think maybe you should have vet look at it to be safe! You don't usually get the black pigment on a cat without black coloration.

That's a good suggestion.  I think I assumed your kitty was the one in your avatar.  

I had a black tuxedo cat, Lefty--the white on his face was on the left side of his nose, that had a perfect round dot on the roof of his mouth.  It never bothered him.

I was glad to find this thread. Our kitten Milly has some teensy dark spots on her gums just above her little upper teeth. I was pretty sure it was just pigmentation. She's a tuxedo.

Have a vet check him out. It may just be lentigo simplex. Search for that on Google and be sure to add 'in cats' otherwise you'll get pics for the human condition.

I'm minutes away from calling my vet about the same issue.
