This is currently a thing! Neko atsume ("cat collecting") is a cute, little-known mobile app game made in Japan that somehow got picked up by social media and has now gained popularity in the West.

In this game, you put out food, toys, cardboard boxes and beds of various colors and shapes to try to attract cats. It's similar in concept to the Tamagotchi of the 1990s. You feed them, watch them lounge at your place (you start out just by having a backyard, and then you can expand to include the living room and 2nd floor) and try to keep them happy so that they'll keep coming back. When cats visit, they leave you "fishies" that serve as the game's currency. You use fishies to buy toys, food, upgrade their boxes into awesome looking cardboard houses and stuff like that.

Also cats have personalities. There's one particularly funny one -- a fat cat called Manzoku-san (lit. "Mr. Satisfied"). Manzoku-san LOVES wet food, and if you put it out, you can expect wet food to be gone very quickly, and you'll have to keep buying wet food (using fishies). Dry food, fortunately, is free, so you can keep refilling the bowl and serves as a basic food item. The more discerning cats won't show up unless you have premium wet food out. :lol3:

Cats that like you enough will leave you gifts.

The app is fully in Japanese, but it's quite intuitive as each menu item has a cute drawing and as you tap them you can kind of figure out what they do. Available at Google Play and iTunes.

Oh, you're into this too, huh?

I don't play it myself but a lot of my friends are really into it. It's  like taking care of a real feral colony. Some of the cats only show up when you're not watching, but you know they paid you a visit because the food is gone and the app lets you know when they were there. (Kind of like having a trail camera for those shy ferals, isn't it?)

One of my friend has collected 36 cats so far. I keep telling her she needs to TNR, but she won't listen to me.

Hello!  I love this game and play on my android every day!  Does anyone know how to view the whole house and yard? I can only see a portion of the yard and I see all these screen shots of the full house and yard for the game.  I've tried to watch game plays, read blogs, ect but cant figure it out.

You have to first purchase the house extension that cost 180 gold fishies. If you just started playing, you only see the backyard. Once you purchased the house extension, you can swipe the screen to see the living room.

You can purchase the house extension by going to menu and tapping on the shopping bag icon. The extension is the very last one on the list.

Hii! It's my first time playing this game and I don't know where my cat is

I took a picture of it, then bought a box, added food and then I don't know where it is.

What to do? It's a very cute game and I want to be patient with it even tho I don't understand what's written there, I probably get used to it, I guess.

Don't panic. These are supposed to be feral cats. It's their role to disappear without warning, make us worried and then suddenly show up again. Just like real feral cats do.

There's probably another feral eating your cats food while he/she is away. You'll see them both soon.

Ohh, ohh, great! Thank you very much! I'm at work right now and I don't have my phone with me so I can't check if the cat is back.

And they did a good job in making me worried. LOL Thank you!!!  :)

One way to get more fish, without actually having to buy it is to look at the news menu in game, daily, get the password and then go to Other>Connect and put in the password. You get some silver fish that way, and a slightly bigger reward if you do it five days in a row.

S = Small. These take up one "spot" in the house. Most small items host only one cat (such as a paper bag), although a few can host more than one.
L = Large. These can only be placed in specific areas of the house, and counts as two "spots". Typically you can only have up to 2 Large toys -- one outside, and one when you expand. Large items generally host more cats.
