About 3 or 4 weeks ago, my husband found a kitten stuck in the tree in our front yard. It was just a baby and cried the first night so much, so the next day, we went and got her a friend so she wouldn't be so lonely. We took them both to the vet to be examined and, as it turns out, they have so many problems. Ring worm, fleas, tapeworms and conjunctivitis. The vet wanted to charge so much money that I didn't have for medication that he sold in his office. I was only able to pay for the office visit and asked what over the counter medication could I use. I think I got all of their issues taken care of, as everything seems better, except their eyes. The vet told me to use Bacitracion ointment twice a day. I have been doing it for over a week now and don't seem to notice any improvement at all. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with their eyes or any suggestions on how to heal this problem as cheaply as possible?

Did the vet use the term conjunctivitis? Many stray/feral kittens are infected with feline herpes which may present as infected eyes.   Lysine (bought over the counter) serves as an immunity boster and is effective.   My vet recommended 250 mg twice a day for my 5 month olds.  I put it into their canned food. Capsules work best as you can just break the case open over the food and mix it in.

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to try that right away. Is feline herpes contagious or harmful? I have 4 kids and 3 of them are under the age of 5

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
No, it is a specific strain to cats. Keep us posted, because if the lysine alone doesn't clear it up (and you'll know in 3 or 4 days if it is helping), you can add lactoferrin to that, and the two together usually take care of the problem.

Thank you for rescuing and adopting!!! :rub:

Thank you so much for saying that! I have to admit, at first, I thought I was in over my head after taking them to the vet and hearing about all the medical issues they had. But, after posting on this site and getting such great advice, I'm happy to say that I'm hopefully winning the battle against the diseases they caught from being outside. I truley believe these kittens are worth the effort and I'm so appreciative for all the advice and encouraging words I have recieved from this site
