I've had an idea for writing a book for quite a while now. I was wondering what steps are there in order to be a published writer? I've not written anything yet but I have bits of paper with character names and town ideas on them. I would very much appreciate any idea/help anyone has. Thank you.

Your local library should have Writer's Guide to the market Place. It is published annually. They may keep it in the no-loan reference section.

If you have not previously had anything published I would suggest starting with something shorter than a novel - get it published in a magazine. It will give you a track record with a publisher, and also let you get a feel for what is involved.

I have only had non-fiction books published so you may want to take this into consideration.

Okay, I will look into it. Would an article be sufficient to start with? I was thinking along the lines of writing a fictional book. I still will consider the advice. Thank you.

I was thinking more along the lines of a short story. You might even use them to begin to develop your characters, see how the story thread develops, play around with descriptions, etc.

Good luck!

I'm not a writer but I'm slowly making a fictional story for a book.

Best thing so far I have figured out is to use application called Free Mind to build map of characters, places, events and so on, then it becomes lot easier to make structure for a story as there usually is more than 7 characters and locations in stories and human can track only 7 things in his mind at the same time or so is said.

Of course different brains work different way, for me that kind of works, it helps me to focus on story instead of struggling with aspects like forgetting some features of characters or events etc.

For me it is bit difficult to handle big things, so I use that application to focus on small things which together make big story, eventually. Too often I end up into my thoughts and plan wonderful adventures without anything ending up on 'paper', so progress is quite slow, but when creating fiction one has to really create the world in his/hers mind where adventures take place.

I guess it is bit similar to what Catapault mentions about creating short stories, I have meeting of characters, action section with certain characters and so on, all short stories in their own 'bubble' which I can then easily combine, for that Free Mind is handy tool as it is so easy to put stuff in their own bubbles there.
