So I took in a stray. I am officially a "foster mother".

Lemme tell you guys the story....

My friends live in Princeton, NJ in a rented house and they have been feeding this beautiful stray, Ella. As the weather got cooler, they began to let her inside and provided her with food, water and a litter box. A neighbor saw them caring for the cat and told the landlord. The landlord threatened to evict them if they didn't get rid of her. My friends find me and ask me to take Ella away and find a good home for her since I have more "pet connections" than they do since I work at petsmart.

I spoke to my manager at work and he told me that he helps take care of a group of barn cats where his horse is. These cats are all spayed and neutered, fed twice a day and treated for fleas in the summer. They are very socialized and spend lots of hours each day with people visitors. He said he would gladly take Ella there, since she loves being outside and loves other cats.

So I bring Ella into Petsmart and a woman with a wonder agency sees her and says she is a house cat and that she has a great personality and she could easily find a home. Trouble is, there is no one to foster her for a few days. I told her that I could foster her for about a week or so until she has room for her.

So I have had Ella for two days now. I take her to the vet tomorrow morning for her spay and tests. The woman of the agency suspected that she may be pregs, but I don't think so since my friends have been feeding for her a year and she lived on the porch and was never, ever seen with kittens.

She is such a lovely cat, I wisyh I could keep her...a beautiful tortie. But I unfortunatly have two other cats who keep me very busy in my tiny apartment. And frankly, my boyfriend would kill me if I brought home another animal for good. We already have two cats, a hamster, a guinea pig, 2 frogs and 9 fish.

Ahh well...she is warm, happy and well fed for now.

Update:

I took Ella to get spayed, tested and vaccinated and it turns out she already has a spay scar. The woman that heads the agency she is being adopted out of suspected she was pregnant. I guess not!

She is also FIV and FELV negative...but I still feel funny about introducing her to my other two cats. Has anyone else ever felt that way? I am so afraid that she could give them a communicable disease or something that the vet didn't test for.

So for now, she has a big bedroom all to herself. I found her sitting on the windowsill last night.

Thanks all

That is quite normal. Once she has been isolated for a while and you feel that she is healthy, it will be much easier for you to introduce them. I typically keep them separated for a while not only to give time to exchange their scents, but to gain comfort that they are healthy.

While they are separated, watch her eating & drinking habits and keep a close eye on the litter box. While FeLV/FIV are the important illnesses to catch, she could still have internal parasites that may still show up. I'm sure that they dewormed her, but there are other parasites/bacteria that dewormers do not treat (coccidia, guardia). Watch the litterbox carefully and you will simply know when it is OK to mix them.
