Hi All,

I was wondering what you think is the best wet or canned cat food that is reasonably priced to feed to cats?

I have two cats who are 9. I give them the grain free, soy free, and corn free cat food that is high in

protein. You know the top of the line kind of dry food. But when I look at the canned food selection I just

do not know what is best.

I don't mind spending some money to get them good food but I do not have the budget to feed them fresh salmon daily

either. So I was wondering what label is best, such a 9 lives, or Whiskas, or fancy feast. Is there another brand

that is might be better. I am l looking for something that I can get a walmart or Petsmart. Thanks.

Everyone has their opinion about this and some are very passionate about it.  Of course first and foremost a wet food that kitty will eat is 'best'.

On the cheaper end Fancy Feast Classics and many of the Friskies pates are good.  Petsmart has their own brand which I believe is Authority is pretty good.  I think their store brand is Authority and Petco's store brand is called Soulistic.

Going on up pricewise, Wellness is good. The top one price wise is Nature's Variety.  I have tried to give my kitties Nature's Variety and they aren't real fond of it  They would just pick at it a bit.  Even though it is one of the best foods available, it isn't good for my kitties because they won't eat it well.

Thanks, my cats will eat Friskies and whiskers pretty well. But since they are from walmart I was not sure how healthy they were for them. I tried 9 lives, they ate it ok and it is hit or miss with Fancy Feast. I did not want to continue to feed them Friskies or Whiskas until I was sure it was healthy for them. I will try Petsmarts Authority brand and see how they take to it.

Whatever brand your cats will eat
One you can afford and can find easily also helps.

There really is no one "best" brand to feed. Some people feed Friskies and Fnacy Feast because that's all their cats will eat or the only brand available where they are. There's nothing wrong at all with these and other similar brands. Others buy the high end $2+ cans for premium grain free / gluten free/ etc food. Not everyone can afford these expensive brands and while the ingredients are better qualiyt, they are no more healthier for a cat than Fancy Feast, IMO.

Some cats are perfectly happy with eating inexpensive food and will turn their noses up at anything more expensive  and/ or of better quality.

Fish / seafood shouldn't be fed every day anyways
They're low in protein and some cats get addicted to eating them and will refuse to eat anything else. Feed fish / seafood once in awhile as a meal or a treat.

PetSmart has a bigger selection of food and often food sales so I would look there at least at first. You can get Fancy Feast and Friskies as well as "medium quality" brands like Wellness and By Nature and Blue Buffalo. If you decide on Fancy Feast or something, Walmart probably has the best price but do comparision shopping and look for deals and sales and coupons.

Here's some info on how to choose a good canned food:

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/what-makes-the-best-canned-cat-food

Ideally look for a brand that is grain-free since cats don't have any use for grains in the diet. Gravy / sauce based foods (usually in pouches or little plastic tubs, sometimes in cans) tend to be mostly the liquid with very little actual food so consider buying pate / loaf foods to get more for the money. You can always add water to the food to make "gravy".

Wellness is a good brand to start with.

I feed my cats raw but do keep cans of Nature's Variety Instinct Originals on hand just in case. I haven't tried anyof the other NV Instinct canned food lines like Pride by Instinct.

Great, thank you so much for your reply @LTS3 the link you provided is just what I needed. Clear and simple to follow. I will print that off and take it to the store when I got shopping for their food next time.

thanks again. you have been very helpful.

I am glad that Friskes and Whiskas are Ok, it  is what they like best. I was concerned because they are the mid priced brand at Walmart. I buy the grain free, soy free, corn free, and by products free dry food for them. I am new to the world of wet food and wanted to start incorporating it more in their diet. So getting a brand that they like is kind of a hit or miss but so far Friskies and Whiskas they take to well.
