Vet wants to charge me $250 for vitamin D testing and $130 for a comprehensive cbc & biochemistry.  Sound about right? $250 for a single test sounded high - he did an "exam" but didn't weigh them or take their temperature and I didn't even see him palpate them. My cat has a rectum that is  bright red and light bleeding and I specifically had to ask him to look at it  - he barely glanced at it and said it is normal and to put powder on it ! -

Now I'm worried because I'm trying to get the lab results and he says he doesn't have a printer and wants to cut and paste the results after looking at it from the lab's website. The guy is too cheap to have a fax or a printer in his office. I can't afford to go somewhere else and have another exam/lab tests so  I told him I need the results and now he says he'll have to print them at home because he has a printer at home and send it to me but I'm worried he even confused the blood samples or didn't order the full panels to save himself money . The guy has been practicing over 40 years & I'm wondering if I should report him to the state board - he should be retiring I think.

Meanwhile I'm right back where I started worrying about the cat's rectum and also her gums bleed too and she lost a tooth and I don't know if that's connected or what. I had my cats checked after feeding food that was recalled for excess vitamin D so I'm concerned this guy couldn't diagnose his way out of a paper bag and will have no idea what the test results would mean anyway. I'm not sure the rectum issue will show up as anything on a blood test either or if there is something else he should have looked at or done like given antibiotics.

What would you do? Ever experience this before? I didn't even realize it until I got home that they never even had a weigh in or temperature taken. Maybe I should report this guy to the state licensing board.

Can you afford to get an exam with another vet at least, even if they don't run tests just yet and see what they think? Sure sounds like you need a second opinion. Maybe another vet could ask for the first vet's records for you.

i agree with @betsygee  . also, i don't think the possible excess Vitamin D is related to the rectum/anus issue. make sure to feed a wet-only diet. if your cat had excess Vitamin D, the signs/symptoms would be: vomiting, weakness, depression, lack of appetite, increased thirst and urination, constipation, among others.

Yes thanks - he is supposed to be sending the labs to me and after I get them I'll take her to another vet for an exam - I did read where excess vitamin D could also cause bleeding problems and he did say the one cat showed excess phosphates so I'm not sure. The $250 vitamin D test isn't back yet. I'd like this stupid vet to pickup the cost for the second exam which I wouldn't have needed if he did his job.
