My 2 1/2 year old male had a urinary blockage on monday.  His bladder was very big and painful.  I took him in asap and they drained it and gave him meds and under the skin fluids.  I brought him home monday night and he just laid by his water dish and didn't really drink (or use the litter box but they said that was normal)   I brought him back tuesday morning like they asked and they did blood work and it showed his kidneys had damage.  They gave me the option to put him down or try to force fluids to help.  I of course chose the fluids.   They also gave me dry urinary cat food for him.

He was there all tuesday and over night until wednesday.  They called wednesday to give me and update saying he seemed like his attitude was better and he was fighting them more.  I brought him home with them saying observe him over night and update us in the morning.

So here it is 3 1/2 hours since I've gotten him home.  He's laying by his water dish not eating.  He has been drinking some and peeing (on his pad he's laying on) still won't sure the litter box.  He seems like hes still kind of lethargic but looks better in his eyes and was purring when I pet him and has even stood up to rub on me and my husband.  I'm just worried he's not recovering well?  Is this normal?

I've never had a cat the was blocked, but my understanding is that it's a tough recovery.  Is he on pain meds?  Was he catheterized?  Have you spoken withyour Vet again since posting?

How is he since you posted?.  I'm hoping by bumping this up someone who has some experience in this arena will respond.

I have had a cat that got badly blocked, but it happened 10 years ago, and he was hospitalised for almost a week. I can't say how normal his behaviour is at this point. I do remember that Shadow had very little interest in food the whole time he was at the vet (I actually had to go in every day and hand feed him poached chicken, as it was the only way he'd eat anything at all). The positive to take from this story is that Shadow is still alive and going strong at 13 years old, and has never blocked again. There is hope.

Try to give him as stress free an environment as possible - this means being as normal as you can with him, and faking calm if you have to!

See if you can get the wet version of the urinary diet (unless there's a very specific reason you've been given the dry). Fluid is vital to his recovery. It's not totally unexpected for him to be wary of his litterbox. Cat logic goes like this: 'it hurts to pee in the box...maybe the box is the problem...If I pee somewhere else it won't hurt...' Simplistic, but kind of sweet. He should go back to the box as he feels better, but if he doesn't a change if location and/or type of box and/or type of litter can break the negative association.

The vet gave him more fluid and he's acting more like himself. And eating also. But now that he's more active he wants to walk around the house but he's still incontinent. I would shut him in the bathroom but it's so hot in there [emoji]128533[/emoji] hubby is getting very annoyed he's peeing everywhere because our home is a rental. Idk what to do. I don't want to put him in his carrier all night because of getting his water.

Can you get or borrow a large dog crate? That way you could confine him overnight, but he'd still have room for a litterbox, water etc. You could even cover the base with puppy pads to catch any urine. Vetbed is great for these circumstances too, as its designed to stay dry on top and let any liquid drain straight through. I had Asha crated for a while (totally different reasons) and it worked very well. This was my setup

I hope your boy feels better soon :vibes:

Otherwise, can you contain him in ONE bedroom room, then rent a carpet cleaner later and clean it really good with an enzymatic cleaner?

No unfortunately the bathroom is the only option and it just gets too hot in there
