So today I was just looking out my window at my garden. Then I noticed a slight movement in the bushes. I saw an long-haired orange tabby. He was drinking from my small pond. (I am guessing he is a boy, cause most orange tabbys are boys) I temporarily named him Foxtail, as his tail looks like a foxes.

I watched him for a bit and discovered he had a collar on. I am not sure if he is lost or if he is an outdoor cat. I have never seen him before, and I am worried. I put out some dry kibble next to the pond in case he is lost and hungry. I do have a live animal trap (from my old house that had racoons), should I catch him? If I do catch him I will look at his collar/chip and make sure he returns to his home.

What should I do?

(I don't have pictures atm of him but he is a very large orange tabby with long hair. His markings are one whit foot in the front and two in the back, and a white tipped tale. He also has green eyes.)

It sounds like he could well have a home.  The best way to find out is, as you say, to check his collar for information, and if there's none, get him checked for a chip.  Another way is to attach a note to his collar saying to please call you if they are the owner, but it's less efficient.

If you can, ask the neighbors.  One of them may be the owner or know who is.  With a collar, he's been owned but he may have been dumped or gotten lost.  Call your local shelter, too and alert them to his presence.  His owners may be looking for him.

If his collar doesn't have ID, then try to take him to the vet or shelter for to check for a chip.

Good luck and thank you for caring!

Update: I haven't seen him again, but when I checked the food bowl in the morning the food was gone. (we have not had racoons/possums here in a few years so prob not them) I will continue to set the food out for him until he can be taken to safety. I asked the neighbors (houses withing a few blocks of me) if they had a lost/outdoor cat and they said they didn't.

He (if I remember correctly) had a reflective collar on. He doesn't have a bell on his collar, because I couldn't hear any bell last night when he was walking around the backyard.
