I leave out dry food for my cats overnight, Halo grain free. The kibbles are small. Out of the 3 cats, the female is petite , she has no difficulty picking up the food, and besides, it's the only dry food she'll eat. The 2 latest additions to my cat family are larger males, it seems they have a harder time picking up the food. One of them I found roaming around in my building's lobby. He appears to have been living in the street a good amount of time. Seems his teeth have some issues, I'll be taking him to the vet later this week. Anyhow ,when he eats he bangs his mouth into the bowl several times to get ahold of the food. The other male has no dental problems, but it seems to me that the larger size of his mouth is the cause of difficulty in picking up the small kibbles and I believe this is causing him to inhale the food and at times vomit it if he eats more than he should. I've been thinking that a larger size kibble may be a solution. However, the cat with the bad teeth may have trouble chewing it.  For the dry food , I use round flat shallow plastic dishes. Perhaps there is a better bowl for serving dry food that makes it easier to pick up, anyone know of such a thing ? Any thoughts? Bowl , larger kibbles? Any suggestions for larger kibble if I go that way? Thanks all.

I'm curious.. what kind of bowl are you using? If its small with high sides, they might not be able to reach in properly with their whiskers getting in the way.

if its a high-side bowl, try placing the kibble on a flat dish, see if that makes a difference. they may be able to grasp the food more.

I was going to suggest a sort of deeper and bigger bowl, although many cats don't like deep bowls, but it may give him the leverage he needs to scoop the kibble up into his mouth. How does he do with wet food?

I use whisker friendly dishes, shallow and wide with low sides. No problems with wet food.
