Hello,I have a cat that gave birth to 4 kittens about 5 weeks ago.We were planning to get her fixed as soon as she was done nursing. She is now about 4 weeks pregnant again and still nursing the first litter. My question is how can I get her fixed if she's still nursing?

Well, ideally you would have kept her inside so she would not have gotten pregnant again. That means you have to endure her noisy behavior during the heat cycle.

Now that she is pregnant, you can let her proceed, or you can take her to the vet and she can be spayed and the pregnancy terminated at the same time. Most cats continue to produce milk and nurse following a spay procedure.

Your kittens are five weeks old. Have you introduced them to food yet? They are old enough to eat wet food and moistened kitten chow, as well as to begin using the litter box.

Another pregnancy this soon will tax your cat's reserves. She will need kitten chow and plenty of wet food herself to bear another healthy litter and not become weak and underweight herself, should you choose to allow the pregnancy to continue.

Are you able to find good homes for these kittens and any future kittens? Have you considered the extra expense of cat food and litter with an additional family? Also vet costs should anything go wrong?

And finally, even if your cat produces another litter, she will again go into heat while nursing, and need to be confined so that she cannot mate again while that litter is still nursing. And eventually, she will still need to be spayed.

All the best in making your decision! :)

All the kittens except for 1 is eating kitten food.We live on a farm and were planning to keep a couple of her first litter but now that she is pregnant again we have found good homes for all 4 current kittens. We will keep 1 or 2 out of her second litter and already have friends that would like some too.How soon after her next litter can I get her fixed? How old do kittens have to be to get fixed?

Kittens need to be about 8 to 10 weeks old, and weigh about 2 pounds, to be fixed.

Does this mama cat live inside? You must keep her inside at all times after the next litter is born so she does not get pregnant again.

You say she is about 4 weeks pregnant and her kittens are 5 weeks old, which means she went out and got pregnant the week after they were born. This could happen again after the next litter, so you need to keep her in the house and not let her out or around any non-neutered males. You can probably have her spayed when the kittens are 8 weeks old, but again, you have to keep her from getting pregnant.

Do you have a spare room you could keep her in with her kittens after the next litter is born? Where you could put the food and water and litter box? It may be your best bet to keep her from getting pregnant.
