Happy Sunday, everyone! :wavey:

First off -

The Sunday Question of the day is available! If you are interested in taking over the Sunday Question of the Day, please PM me. :bigthumb:

So you are going to a Potluck type meal and need to bring something. What do you normally bring? Do you make something or do you normally pick something up? Do you have a specialty?

My niece is having a party here next weekend and I am looking for more food ideas. :lol3:

I normally ask the person having the party and then wait to see what they are short on and make something to complement what others are bringing.

Usually I take whatever our current favorite dish is that I'm making at home. The last potluck I went to was in December and I took chili and it was a huge hit, but I make a really good pot of chili.
A few times I've been too busy to cook anything, so we've gone to the grocery deli and bought a couple of dozen of assorted samosas, and those always went over well. When we throw parties, we always order a huge sushi tray from a really good neighborhood sushi restaurant, and that always goes really fast.

I tend to bring main dishes since we have dairy allergies in the family, and I want to make sure my husband and daughter have enough food to eat. I've been to some parties where almost everyone brought desserts; it seems main dishes are always welcome.

I'm usually in charge of putting pot lucks together at work so I usually end u bringing multiple dishes to make up for the slackers.

I usually bring a ham because everyone loves it. This past one I made these and they were a HUGE hit http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Brown-Sugar-Smokies/

Sometimes I bring a homemade potato salad and usually a dessert of some kind. Everyone loves the chocolate chip cookies I make so I usually will bring those and switch it up by changing the flavor of the chips. Lately they love the white chip macadamia ones best. Sometimes I will bring brownies.

If it's one of those bring whatever you want deals I usually make a pasta, sauce, and cheese bake thing.  If I bring a dessert, which I rarely  do, it's an additional dish.  There  always seems to be more  than enough desserts.

Those look so good. My mother in law makes something similar but adds butter.

I always bring something called Robert Redford dessert to every gathering people love it! My mom and my grandma both made it for every holiday.
I know there are different versions. The way I make it is with a walnut crust with layers of chocolate pudding, cream cheese, and whipped cream. So easy and delicious!

I'm really bad at cooking, but one of my friends loves to throw themed pot luck parties, so it's a bit easier to decide what to make. She usually makes it a fancy dress pot luck party, which makes me more eager to go because I love any excuse to dress up.

For Halloween I made a chocolate pudding with banana "ghosts" sticking out of the chocolate mud. For her Easter picnic I made egg salad finger rolls and stuck yellow cardboard chicks on toothpicks into each roll.

If in doubt I usually make guacamole and buy some chips or bread sticks. Can't go wrong with that.

It depends on who is having the dinner. If it's at my sister's, then I'm expected to bring certain foods: Crock pot baked beans, homemade potato salad, my 7-layer salad, cookies, etc. I am always amazed at how many people enjoy homemade cookies. Usually, she'll call me and say, " We're doing dinner. You make beans, potato salad, and 7-layer salad. If you have time, make some kind of cookie." Usually it's snickerdoodles, but sometimes, if I do have some time, I'll bring two kinds, maybe snickerdoodles and the white chip-macadamia cookies or the chocolate-peanut butter cookies....my BIL loves those.

If it's somebody else, I'll ask if there's something in particular they might want me to make. They'll tell me if they need a veggie salad or pasta/potato salad.

Depending on what kind of dinner, she's having, one of my GFs will ask me to make a couple loaves of homemade bread. We'll cut it into slices, slather with onion butter and cheese, wrap it in foil and throw it on the grill or toss it in the oven.

I have noticed that a lot of people will bring some kind of dessert, so I try to stick with entrees or sides, things that many people don't like to make.

And I usually do have some kind of cookies on hand, too.

My inlaws have a house here in Florida and they come down from time to time. They are here now so DD and I went there yesterday. They both love sweets so I brought white chip macadamia cookies and a pan of Paula Deen's Double chocolate gooey butter cake that when you chill it  and cut it into squares is more like a brownie. They were pretty happy

It must be so nice having you as a friend or a relative Pam, all those amazing things you can make. My friends have all given up on me. If they're having a party they usually call me to say "Laura.....just bring the beer."
