Would like people's opinions about Meow Mix and whether or not it's good for my cat long term? TIA!

I uses to feed mine Meow Mix but then when  they would ralph if I didn't clean it up right away it would actually stain the carpet.  I started thinking about what they were using to color the cat food and it freaked me out.  So I quit using it.

It's horrible junk food

The dry foods are full of corn and by product and various meals. No real muscle meat which a cat needs in the diet.

The various cup foods aren't much better (wheat gluten, artificial flavors, etc) but at least they have a higher water content.

Is it bad for a cat long term? Possibly. There are cats out there who have eaten nothing but dry Meow Mix for their entire lives and have never had a single health issue as a result of the food (urinary issues, diabetes, etc). Then there are cats who can't handle all that corn or carbs.

If you can afford a better brand of food, then I suggest that you look into better quality foods. Pet stores have good brands available like Wellness and Nature's Variety and Blue Buffalo. Most people here recommend grain-free food.

Here are some threads to read about choosing a good food:

In my opinion Meow Mix is not good ..  My two top reasons :  way too much added color and it is preserved with BHA , really bad stuff ..

Meow mix dry has a lot of dye in it. Meow Mix wet always give my cats loose stools. I would to suggest Purina Naturals or Gentle which have no dyes but canned is better.

Haven't fed Meow Mix to the cats we have now, but in the past when we fed Meow Mix to our first cats they always seemed to have a bad reaction. Stopped feeding it immediately and never bought it again

I would not feed my cat the dry Meow Mix cause it contains artificial colors, bha/bht and corn and i personally feed the wet food as a treat. If i were you i would feed her/him Natural Balance, Tiki Cat, Blue Buffalo or Fancy Feast wet and Royal Canin, Natural Balance or Blue Buffalo for dry.

My cats loves meow mix, she even holds out for it,but I don't give it to her as a main food source. I sprinkle it with her good dry food.

I don't have chickens so why would I feed my furbaby chicken food!  She's weird - won't touch people food or any kind of wet food.  We free feed her one kind for her regular food, and have two other brands for treats. They are all high quality foods.  We also have two feral babies we feed twice a day with one of the other brands for treats when they come around looking for them. [we can't free feed them - too many other 'critters and unfortunately can 't feed them all [well, sometimes because we just can't help it].

long ago, when I was young and didn't know much about it, I fed my cats meow mix.  They liked it, were never overweight nor underweight even though they always had food in their dish, and they were pretty healthy.  When we moved, we had to rehome two of our three cats, but one had special needs and we kept her with us.  With the cat under vet care, and only having the one, we switched to a higher quality of food, and feeding has never been the same since. She would go days without eating, started pooping outside of the littler box... refusing all dry food, and being very pickey about which wet food she would eat.  eventually she died of chronic renal failiure at the ripe old age of 19.  It just got to be habit to feed the higher quality foods.  Now we have two new cats, and they both are picky eaters... one day, we caught the cat sitting there eating the corn we put out for the squirrel.  Make me wonder...
