I adopted a shelter cat a week ago. She started sneezing. I called shelter and she said probably has uri. She said bring cat by  and they will give shot for $40. Now my senior cat sneezed once this morning so I'm not sure about her. After shelter cat gets shot, does my house still have germs that can re-infect either cat? Should I bring senior cat to vet or watch? Money is an issue, and I am afraid for senior cat, both have good appetites  and show no other symptoms.

Your other cat could have been infected, I wouldn't assume this is the case with just one sneeze.  Your kitty may have been infected but has fought of the URI for the most part.  I hope your kitty doesn't get sick.

It's a possibility your resident cat will become ill, but I'd keep an eye on her and if it gets worse, take her in.  I'd caution against the shot, though.  I'm assuming it's Convenia.  It really isn't designed for URI.  There are some other meds that will work better and cost less.

Oh dear, took shelter cat to vet. Who had done her spay. She wanted to take feline lukemia test and also tested for uri. She said all was negative. Just like u said she gave her a shot of covenia.  Vet said to keep them separated, which I did, but, it is too late my resident cat who is 11 is sneezing some. She was a rescue from Shreveport and they had no medical history. She has a rabies shot, but that is all they knew. In other words I have adopted 2 cats within two months.

I was charged $110 for the visit. Vet said negative for uri but, gave shot anyway and said give it a couple days to get better. They both have good appetites though and show no other symptons. I really worry about my resident cat she is the sweetest cat ever. I don't trust vets and feel discouraged, because I want to do the right thing by the shelter cat. Her  name is Wednesday, she was fixed 5/26/15 and I picked her up 5/29/15. The lady at the shelter(2 employees, totally overwelhmed) offered to give her a shot because she said uri were going around with other

cats. She said she would take $40 and save $30 office visit.  I thought it would be better to go to the vet and things are the same. What is my next move?

As long as they are eating well, your next move would be do nothing and hopefully all will be well.  It's when they get so congested that they stop eating that you need to take next steps.  But if I am reading this correctly, they now have BOTH had the Convenia shot, correct?  It may not be the best antibiotic, but it's still an antibiotic, so may do the trick
, especially if it's not a BAD UTI.

An occasional sneeze isn't necessarily a bad thing.  Your resident cat might have enough antibodies to fight off any kind of infection.  Just so you know, it's so very common for a new kitty to come down with an URI about 10-14 days after coming into a new home.  If you can decrease your stress, it'll help both of them.  They'll pick up on your stress and that'll just aggravate their situations.  So, just keep an eye out on them and make sure they're eating, drinking, and using the box like normal.  Any abnormal changes in behavior, appetite, or litter box habits warrants a trip to the vet.

Thank you.It is true, I am stressed. The shelter cat is not the the original cat I wanted. They said she had 6 liters
in 2 yrs.and was not very adootable. The owner turned her and her babies
in.Anyway I got her to vet and had a
shot of covina. My resident cat is
receiving amoxicillin at home. I think it will all work out. Thanks for your
insight.

The only cat that is well is my shelter cat. My senior cat taken to vet.Oral antibiotics did not work. Vet took swab mouth and sent it off.My indoor/outdoor cat has been given clavamox 62.5 mg. He is still sneezing after taking it for 3 days. Everyone is in separate rooms. I don't know how many days it takes to see improvement.I'm having a heck of a weekend. Between the 3 I have spent $300. I don't think I should have adopted cat from shelter.

Don't be sorry for taking in a URI kitty - I came across Molly as a 3 week old abandon super sick URI positive and she has only been very sick 2 times in 2 years. I adopted Maggie after and the Vet said she had been exposed to URI when young and beyond the once in a great while sneezes - Maggie is super healthy. I do mix lysine into their food every day - it's supposed to help control outbreaks. Molly sneezes every day and sometimes it's messy but she is otherwise happy. I move them around all of the time - for weekends to visit relatives and it doesn't seem to bother them. In fact the only time is when they seem stressed is when we separate them.
You did a very good thing giving that kitty a home. Your kitties will be fine.

Never feel bad for adopting a shelter kitty.  Unfortunately, these kinds of things happen when you bring in a new kitty.  One of the things you can do to help everyone is to use a Feliway diffuser to help everyone's stress levels decrease.  That in turn, helps their body's heal.

Yes, it's usually much less expensive to get the animal prescriptions filled at a human pharmacy

Good to know that you now KNOW what it is, and have the right antibiotic for the job!   Always helpful.

for quick healing time

Glad you have a diagnosis and a treatment plan.  Hope your baby's on the mend soon.
