As said, I did the same thing with the fluids everyday and in the end...it was the end...You want to do EVERYTHING you can but when life is ending you have to let it go. What I did was prolong my Franny's life and it was not pretty.  But I tried for 2 extra days hoping she would pass at home and I would not have to have the vet come and inject her.  In the end I had to have the vet come.  Be kind to your life time friend, do the right thing when the time comes...as we all say..you will know.  Keep us posted please.

Candyman, if her not eating is becoming an issue., the vet can prescribe something called CYPROHEPTADINE that has to be compounded and applied to her ears to increase her appetitie. She actually looks very healthy outwardly, and she is gorgeous!

You may want to try a holistic vet.. Drmarty.com tells you about him and www.smithridge.com is his group.. As long as you have the medical records for your cat they will work with you and your vet by phone. My sister's cat was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago and he is going strong. He is 13 and acts like a kitten. Good luck to you and your beautiful kitty.

When my cat got sick, he began losing weight as well....at his heaviest he was 18 pounds.  As his health deteriorated, he dropped some weight...I think the last year of his life, he was between 9-10 pounds.  When he first started to drop the weight, I went out and bought a few different flavors of as many brands as I could find.  My cat loved Fancy Feast....but he quit eating that for a couple of months...then he eventually came back around to that.  I even tried canned tuna...my cat seemed to like that.

So, my advice to you is go out and buy several types of cat food.  My vet told me he read a study and they determined Fancy Feast was the best tasting cat food for cats.  I have no idea how they determined that...or the validity of the test.  So, take that for what you will.  Stop by a Pet Supplies Plus, Petco or someplace like that....that sell natural food and give them a shot.  Try different types of protein: chicken, beef, tuna, salmon, duck etc.  The key is to find some food that will make your cat start eating again on a regular basis.  Miss Kitty needs all the energy she can get to fight this thing!

Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your lovely friends illness. My Dorge the (ginger one) who passed away about 6 weeks ago had a similar problem. The vets diagnosed a mass in his chest, and they weren't sure what it was either. After the diagnosis he lived for a further 6 months and during that time he got thinner and thinner, hiding, etc.. and was not the same cat I used to know. He was also fourteen/15 Years of age. I knew the diagnosis was not good for him, so I just kept him as comfortable as possible and carried on with the steroid's he was having to relieve any pain. I said to myself that I didn't want him to suffer anymore, and had decided to take him to the vet to end his suffering. However, it seems he decided for me and he died at home one Sunday afternoon. I had loved that cat so much and so being Buddhist, I put him on my shrine and said some special prayers for him.

As for your vet, I'm sure he is trying to do all he can for Miss Kitty. I have worked in the medical profession, (Operating Department Practitioner) and have seen on many occasions Consultants asking advice from their colleagues when they come across something they haven't seen before. You have to appreciate, that every human, cat, or whoever are unique individuals and , yes, in my job I can honestly say that I saw something different every day.

Dorge also has a sister Tara who s still going strong.

I wish Miss Kitty and yourself all the best

I'm reading through quickly tonight, but I believe with the photo's etc you baby came home.  Do not let a sick cat out anymore.  They will leave and find a place to die and you don't want that.  The predisone is another issue too.  I took my cat off it to quickly to start another Vet's regime and I have a feeling it really made Franny slide down hill fast.  They have to be weaned off.  OK please keep us up to date, after going thru this last year the only thing that helped me through was all of these very kind people on The Cat Site!  We are here for you.

I just want to point out that if it's lymphoma, it's an immune system cancer and stimulating the immune system can stimulate it to grow more. That's why prednisone is used for treating it. Suppressing the immune system means the cancerous immune cells aren't multiplying as fast, and they're more susceptible to other treatments.

It might be worth looking into how safe turmeric is for cats. It's one of the most promising herbs for cancer in humans, but I haven't researched how it works on cats (and their livers are so different from ours because they're obligate carnivores). I've heard good things about chaga for cancer, but I don't know about the other herbs in that Life Gold stuff. Besides turkey rhubarb possibly causing diarrhea ("gently helping the body to excrete accumulated waste material through the bowels" is a really nice way of putting it....), if she is having diarrhea now and wasn't before it might be worth looking into other supplements. Fungi Perfecti has a good reputation for quality and has plain chaga (the liquid has alcohol, but you could break open the capsule form), that's probably the ingredient in the Life Gold that's doing the most.

I am very sorry to hear Miss Kitty has cancer. I do think you are on borrowed time and as such, you should continue the medications the Vet prescribed. All you can really do is keep her comfortable and happy. Kind of like kitty hospice.  I also want to say for me, with my cats, I'd rather have them put down a day early than to have them suffer for a day. I will deal with my emotions then but for them, they must be comfortable. I am sure you will know when she is ready to go.

As said, I too agree Nansilude, I wish I had let Franny go to Heave the day before because the last night was miserable for her.  She was almost in a coma when she peep herself.

I've been following this discussion and didn't feel I had anything important to say so I've kept quiet but at this time I would like to give some feed back.

I've owned cats all my life (I'm 72 and can't live without a purr button) and I've had to put some of them down a beloved kitten just recently; and give some of them away but I have a little story to tell about 2 of the cats I owned and hopefully this will help you to get a better perspective. These 2 cats were Big Dusty (Maine Coon) and Little Dusty (Blue Point Himalayan). They were getting up in years and because I needed to sell my house I asked my dad who was in his middle 90s and lived at home with a care giver if I could house them there until our house sold and we moved into our new home. Of course he said yes and he fell in love with them. Because of their ages, my dad and the cats, I couldn't bring myself to relocate them once again so I left them with him. On one of my visits I noticed that they were both extremely thin and took B Dusty to the Vet. He seemed to think there was a problem with her kidneys and recommended a special diet. Both cats were around 15 years old at this time. A short time later I noticed L Dusty was wasting away as well and I asked my dad (he complained about the vet bills) if I could put them to sleep because it was killing me to see them suffer but he said no so I relented. Of course the end did come for both of them. My point of view is and always has been that I would rather put my beloved kittys to sleep and deal with the grief than see them suffer. I guess the bottom line is do you want to keep your beloved kitty alive to avoid the pain of loss? Or do you truly believe she will get well? Our pets like ourselves eventually run out of time and no matter what we do we can't save them. My heart goes out to you and your painful journey I'm keeping you in my prayers and hope you are able to do what's best for your beloved kitty.

I take the view that I honestly don't know if or how much our cats are suffering.  I take the view that I treat them the way I would a family member. I did not put my mother "to sleep" when she was dying of cancer - I made sure she had pain medicine and care and let her go when she was ready.  The two most recent cats I have lost:  My Cynthia - a beautiful dilute calico - had health problems (including cancer) the last 2 years of her life. If I had let her go when she was first diagnosed with cancer and the vet gave her "three months," she would not have had some of the good times she had in the following two years.  Yes, it was probably annoying to her to go to vet vists, take medicine every day, etc. But she would have missed out on all the cuddles with her good friend Swanie, all the "head licks,"  all the sunbeam naps and watching the wildlife out the window, etc.  I would do the same again given the choice.  With Darcy, the sweet little kitten we did have put down, it was the end for her (FIP), but we didn't rush to do it while she was still having good quality of life.  Of the two, the one that haunts me the most is Darcy.  I feel as though I decided for her when it was time for her to go, and maybe I was wrong.  I miss Cynthia dearly, but I have comfort knowing she was allowed to pass peacefully (on pain medicine)  lying on her favorite blanket on the bed with us by her side.  Just because it's uncomfortable for me to see them possibly suffering is not sufficient reason for me to have them put "to sleep."

The bottom line is to always go with your heart and what you can live with later. It's very personal decision, but always remember that their lives are in our hands and it's not a decision to make lightly.

I'm very sorry about your kitty. :(

I am no cancer expert nor am I a vet.  In my opinion, the best thing you can do is to make her as comfortable as possible right now.  Give her medication for pain relief.  Make sure you love on her and spoil her as much as possible.  She will let you know when she is ready to go.  You know your kitty better than any vet can, and I believe you are the best judge on when she tells you she's ready.

In the meantime, I hope that she can remain comfortable.  I can relate how difficult it is to watch your kitty decline.  I lost my Jewel (my avatar photo) slowly decline from chronic renal failure last year.  It is very difficult and painful.  Know that you are supported here.
