I ordered a case of this from Amazon:

Then I panicked when I saw some of the reviews. One reviewer believes that an exclusive diet of the food put her cat into kidney failure. Can anybody give me any more information on this food? I'm about ready to pack it up and return it to Amazon, I surely don't want to hurt my fur babies.

My local pet health food store recommended Wureva for my cat who recently had a urinary crystal blockage. Can't speak from experience of using it, but apparently it's one of the higher quality grain free, low carb, mostly meat canned food you can find. If you decide to send it back & try something else, they also recommended i look up the brand Hound & Gatos. Their website has a ton of useful info.

You can't always rely on Amazon reviews
Oftentimes they're not accurate or only tell part of the story. A diet that is heavy on seafood can be hard on the kidneys because seafood tends to be high in phosphorus. Did the reviewer say if only seafood was fed? Don't let a few negative review put you off.

Kidney failure can be caused by many things, not just food. Some breeds are prone to kidney issues. Underlying other health issues can cause kidney issues. Here is what Weruva says about their products for cats with kidney issues: http://weruva.com/tid-bits-detail.php?My-cat-has-kidney-issues-can-I-feed-Weruva-7 They don't specifically recommend or discourage the food for kidney issues, just makes owners aware of how diet can play a role.

I feel that Weruva is a good brand of food to feed. Just limit the seafood based ones to once in awhile meals. The BFF line of food that is made by Weruva is mostly all seafood based.

It looks like seafood plus Menadione Sodium Bisulfite is the potential problem, from a little poking around. I will be returning the case, because the variety pack that I got has 7 cans of seafood and I can't justify throwing out that many or using that many, since it's supposed to be only an occasional part of their diet.

I ordered a case of Spot's Stew instead. I've been happy with them and I really should have just stuck to a brand that I was familiar with. I've worked so hard on our kitty's health (adopted a cat with known issues), I don't want any setbacks.

And yes, it appears that the reviewer who's kitty had major issues, fed him only seafood for 3 weeks.

I had 18 year old cat sisters and two 14 year old dogs that ate weruva. It is wonderful, keep the order and just feed the seafood once a week until gone. I fed paw licken chicken and steak frites mostly. The food is some of the best out there. Processed in a human grade facility in Thailand, the same facility processes tuna for subway restaurants.

I'm looking around and it looks like fish really isn't advisable to feed to cats, period, though.

Once a week is ok, I give mine tuna and prawns by fussie cat once a week, they love it and it looks and smells great. I feed wet food only so I like to give them different proteins every day. They like chicken in pates, shreds and chunks, duck, turkey, liver, Tuna , rabbit.

What about Menadione Sodium Bisulfite? That was the other concern about the seafood cans.

FWIW, I've been feeding my cat who already has kidney issues Weruva, among other brands, and have not seen any adverse effects. I feed mainly the chicken based flavors and avoid the all-fish flavors, since those are the ones with menadione.

I probably will just send it back. I bought a variety pack and 7 out of the 12 cans are fish based.

So if I split one 3 oz can between 2 kitties once or twice a week, they shouldn't get sick?

Correct, unless they are allergic to fish, some cats are. Most cats love fish, some even get addicted due to the strong smell. Everything in moderation is key, you never want too much of anything. That is why I try to rotate foods every day, never feeding the same wet food every day.

Alright, I'll just put it high up in the cupboard and set up a rotation schedule for it, to ensure that it doesn't get eaten too much. I wish that I hadn't bought any with fish in it to begin with, but oh well, live and learn I guess!

At least you got a good sampling to see what they like!
If they like the shredded foods, petco soulistic is by weruva and you can buy individual cans and pouches at petco

I probably should try going to Petco more. I favor ordering off of Amazon as we're in a rural area (about 30 minute drive from Petco) but there's something to be said for not having to buy an entire case of each kind.

I find the best prices at chewy.com after you find out what they like. I ask different companies to send me samples or pick up random cans at specialty stores, then I order in bulk at chewy.com for their rotations. Chewy has a great customer service, ships in 2 days, great assortment, sales, and complete ingredient breakdown, and reviews. I have had over 20 companies send me canned samples based on unavailability in my area.

Petco sells Soulisic, which is made by Weruva. It comes in both cans and pouches. Feed the seafood ones only once in awhile. Petco may be able to sell you a case of food.
