"My heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today" - Richard Adams
Even though this applies more to rabbits more than cats, I feel this prayer fits my furry feline friend, Tarzan.
Tarzan was never my cat. He belonged to no one and he made sure to keep it that way. My apartment complex was his jungle. I remember meeting him when I was coming home from a late night at work. He dropped out of a tree in front of me. Scared me good. He followed me back to my place always staying just out of reach. Luckily for him I kept a small pouch of cat food in my cupboard and we became fast friends.
Time went by and I met his girlfriends. Two Siamese sisters that I named Harley and Quinn. Harley and Tarzan were near inseparable. Quinn always kept her distance from me. I didn't mind. Tarzan was always there to greet me and bum food off me. Shadowed by Harley every time.
Months later, I took in my kitten Rogue. I watched her with bated breath as she grew from a sickly kitten to pretty young lady. Tarzan noticed too. He would sing under her window almost every night. He would also serenade the neighborhood from the rooftops and trees.
I should have realized something was wrong when he disappeared for a few weeks. I figured he was out on an extra long ramble, expanding his territory. He returned to me about two days ago. Sick and thin.
I took my friend in. Though I am very poor myself, I did my best to make him comfortable. I spent hours trying to get this once handsome rogue to simply drink from a little syringe. When he started to bleed heavily through his nose, I was forced to make a very difficult decision. I contacted my local shelter and they were very understanding and sensitive Tarzan and I in our desperation. They took him and assured me they would do all they can.
I have recently found out that Tarzan was made of much sterner stuff than I could ever imagine. The shelter explained that my wild feline friend had been hit by a car sometime back and he had massive internal and cranial damage. Through all of this he was able to hold his head high. Proud as ever. His misery and pain were finally ended at 11:30am Pacific time this morning.
Tarzan was my buddy. His mischievous and bold nature brought joy to his jungle. Though the hummingbirds were less than thrilled. I write this eulogy in honor of him. May you rest in peace my friend, and may the trees and rooftops be plentiful where you are.
Goodbye Tarzan.
