Nightmare

It's what every feral cat caregiver dreads - forced relocation.   That's what is happening to my cat colony and it is, without doubt, a nightmare.

I no longer have permission to feed on private property, the grounds of a nursing home.  The person who'd given permission won't answer calls nor e-mail.

There are 6 young cats - none much more than 2 years old.  All are healthy and have been vet-checked, vaccinated and S/N.   A seventh is with a rescue group who's trying to socialize her - so far without much success.

Animal Control has ironically, been sympathetic and has extended the time for me to trap and relocate.  But time is now short.  They can't do that indefinitely.   They tell me they are "getting tons of calls" from the nursing home asking when the cats will be gone.

There is open hostility from the management of the nursing home toward the cats.   All of their shelters and feeding stations were thrown in the dumpster.  I could only salvage 2 of the 8 shelters.  The feeding stations, built by local Girl Scouts, were damaged beyond repair.

Management has ordered all employees to sign a statement pledging not to feed the cats.  Each week a memo is circulated reminding them of this.

The rescue group loaned me 2 box traps and I'd been working over the last few weeks to get the cats acclimated to eating in them.  During this time the traps were moved several times, then damaged, and as of last Wednesday, stolen.    I'm trying to remove the cats, which is what is clear management wants, yet they keep sabotaging my efforts.

I'm very worried that the next step will be they'll try to hurt the cats.

I have 2 of the 6 at my house, each in a cat condo cage.  I trapped them as soon as I saw them since both had stopped showing up regularly for meals.   I was afraid I wouldn't get them before animal control came in.  They've been in the cages too long, now - about 2 weeks.  My heart aches for them but what else could I have done?

Though it's a big world, there seems to be no place for my 6 little guys.  I have nowhere to take them.

I have tried the sanctuaries everyone knows about, and maybe some that aren't as well known.  I looked into integrating them into existing colonies but no one wants to do that.   I've asked everyone I know to ask everyone they know if there's a safe permanent place.   No takers.

In about 10-12 days the cats will be out of time.  I've got a small house and nowhere to put more kittes.  Even if I did,  they cannot live their lives in cages.

No one will take 6, I know that.  But if anyone would take a set of 3 ,  I'd be beyond grateful.  I will provide a sturdy shelter,  a feeding station, several months worth of canned food, and a pledge to continue to help the person, or place taking the cats with contrributions or supplies.    I love these cats and I've no intention of "dumping" them on anyone.   I want them safe and cared for.

I'm in Northern NJ but I'll drive to New England or Virginia or Western Pennsylvania or further if someone's out there who can help the cats.

This is one of the worst situations I've ever experienced - I have no idea what I'm going to do.  I am so afraid for these 6 wonderful little souls.

Oh, wow, how horrible. Can you contact Alley Cat Allies to see if they will help? Also report the nursing home to the police, they damaged property and stole traps. It happened on their grounds, there should be cameras there. I'm very sorry about this. Can you bring the other 6 home just for now?

I found this list on a google search not sure if any new ones are here or not. http://www.shelterandrescue.org/2005/04/nj_feral_cat_resources.html

I'm so sorry that you are in this situation. I'm texting my husband about it now, as we are in the country on a large acreage and I have entertained the idea of hosting feral kitties to help with the out of control mouse population.

Probably I wouldn't be an ideal set up because we rent our country house, so odds are that someday we'll move from the property.

Oh, I see. Okay. I hope someone can help KTlynn with the cats. It's such a shame that the nursing home has turned bitter towards the cats. I am worried, what are they eating now? Could you possibly set food out for them on trays and pick them up before you leave?

Thank you, nansiludie and Crazy4Strays for replying.

Nansiludie, the rescue group whose box traps were stolen did file a police report and intend to take the management to civil court.   Unfortunately, there is virtually no security at this facility, so there aren't any cameras which might have recorded who took the traps.

Thanks also for the link - there are a couple of organizations listed on it that I will contact today.   I'll let you know how it goes.

I'd called Alley Cat Allies as soon as I knew the cats were in trouble.  The woman I spoke with was very sympathetic and tried to be helpful.  She offered her direct phone line as a contact for management if they wanted to discuss the situation.   But management just wants the cats removed.  Alley Cat Allies doesn't have a list of sanctuaries or safe places to take displaced feral cats.

Crazy4Strays, thank you so much for considering taking a couple of my cats.   I appreciate that you thought about it seriously enough to think ahead and realize that yours might not be a permanent home for the kitties in the future.   You're the kind of person I hope I can find who'll offer a new home for my little guys.

Relocation is tough, I know. But there's no alternative.  I have spoken to people who say that it can be done successfully as long as the method for implementing it is followed diligently.

To both of you, thank you so much for caring and taking the time to reply.

The remaining 4 cats are being fed every day.  I am going 6 days per week, and a man who volunteers for the rescue group who loaned me the box traps feeds 1 day per week.    I wait for the cats to finish eating, pick up their plates as I've always done (I've never left food down) and hide a bowl of clean water.

The little guys wait for me every day - they know my car and start running toward me soon as I get close to where they're fed.    I used to laugh at the antics - running back and forth with happy tails, head-butting each other, rolling back and forth on the ground.  You just had to smile seeing how happy they were that dinner was on the way.    Now I get choked up.   They have no idea of what's coming.

Is it possible to keep them outdoors at your home and feed them there? Or does your city have an ordinance prohibiting that?

How far are you from farming country? Are there any farmers who could adopt your ferals and experience a mutually beneficial relationship as the ferals keep their rodent population in check?

I am glad to hear they still have food coming. Ferals do tend to be very friendly among themselves. I agree with Crazy4Strays they have a good idea.
