A neighbor gave us a 7-8 week old barn kitten 2 days ago. He looks very healthy and it seems his mother only left shortly before. The neighbor said that a few days before the moms milk supply was almost gone and that she was getting ready to leave her 6 kittens. So he called when she did! All kittens are already in good homes :)!

We named our baby Tony and he's full of life. We just lost a tiny abandoned kitten a few days before and it was heartbreaking so I think I'm just being a little neurotic about his health...

Tony took to a mixture of kitten food and formula right away and now he's pretty much only eating wet food. You can tell he had a pretty good mama because he paces himself with his food and jumps right in the litter to Poo!

His poop is a little soft but I'm thinking that's just from the food change?

What I'm really worried about is the fact that when he squats to pee he only pees like a dime size amount! There is no blood in the pee and he just pops right out to play after but I'm still worried.

Is it Change of food?
Is he stressed about the move?

As I type this he's purring and cleaning himself on my lap. He's the image of health. So...

Why only tiny pee pees?!?!

He looks just like my new baby Daisy Mae she is 7 weeks and does the same thing. It's a very small amount of pee I don't think it's something to worry about because based on their size their bladders are probably not very big and can't hold much.

@TONYkat -- hi and welcome to TCS!

your little tony sure is a cutie!

i'm so sorry for your loss. i'm sure your little abandoned kitten knew love during his short life with you. i always believe that when young kittens cross the rainbow bridge, it's because they were so very special that someone 'up above' brought them up there very early.

so tony is peeing only about a dime-sized amount each time he pees. but, how often is he peeing? also, young kittens are like toddlers in that they can't always make it to the litter box -- because when they feel the need to 'go', they need to 'go' right now. so it might be a good idea to set out a few temporary litter boxes (low sided ones, or even low sided disposable aluminum baking pans will do) around your home, so tony won't have far to go to get to a litter box no matter where he is in your home.

is your boy drinking water? many cats don't have a strong thirst drive, and get most of their water from the foods they eat. that's great that you have your tony eating pretty much only wet food now! a lot of people add a little water, and mix it in, to their cats wet food to provide a little extra water for them.

tony has been in his furever home two days now. he's still adjusting, getting familiar with his new home and getting to know your routines. cats do very well with routines.

has tony been to your vet's yet? it's a good idea to start him off with your vet, and soon enough he'll be old enough to start his kitten shots. also, most kittens have worms -- it's very normal. so you'd want to use a wormer from your vet's, because (i always feel) it's much more safe than OTC wormers and your vet will be able to give the correct dosage for your boy based on his weight, etc.

edited to add:  are you feeding tony wet food specifically for kittens?

I wonder, may it be so he is also peeing somewhere else?

Otherwise, make sure he always has fresh water in a bowl, not too near his food.

You can even have several bowls, one of them with a little stale water - some cats prefer stale water...

Taste of wild cat/kitten food. The vet said that would be fine for the last kitten so that is what I'm using. I mix it with water and he laps up quite a bit of liquid.

I will put a fresh bowl of water out for him. What are your thoughts on bottle feeding him water so that he gets some liquid in his system ?

I'm setting up a vet appointment for him today :) so he will be in sometime this week hopefully

We live pretty much in the middle of nowhere but we are going into "the city" today for groceries I can look for other kitten food if you think that is better? The brand I'm using. Was the only option except for FF at my towns store. I assumed since this one was more natural and rich it would be better for him.

I do have KMR in the house if you think he should maybe get some of that too?

Thanks for all of your input!

taste of the wild is a good brand, and one that i serve my cats (as part of their canned food rotation).

i'll let more experienced members respond about the KMR.

How many litter pans does he have? I am inclined to agree with the others, that he may be peeing elsewhere, he's little and he was a barn-cat so he might not know right now about where the litter box is and is finding an alternative potty area, check under and behind, beds and sofas.

We are keeping him in our little sun room. It's the warmest room with lots of windows for him. He has 2 litter pans . One big one across the room and one tiny one near his little bed.

wet food which you also mix out with water should be enough.   But if you by any reason thinks he anyway gets too little, so why, nothing wrong with giving a little extra with a bottle.

He doesnt need KMR any longer, but you can use up the KMR if you so wish.  It doensth harm him.  Unless you want to keep it in reserve, if you find some other orphan and want rescue it... :)

Goat milk is always OK for cats, esp raw goat milk.  Again, not necessary at this age any longer, but a very natural, nourishing extra food.
