I went camping for the weekend from Friday to Sunday and it's the longest I've left my cat since I adopted him in February. And let me tell you, I could not wait to get home to Ming!
Aside from the fun times kayaking, singing songs by the campfire and catching tadpoles, I missed my cat a lot. It was a large retreat camp and for one game, we had to talk to as many people as we could in 10 mins and find out similarities between us. The person with the most similarities wins. I won and asked every person I spoke to if they liked cats. For the rest of the weekend, I was dubbed the cat girl.
Anyway, throughout the weekend, my mom would text me and tell me what was going on with Ming. I usually go to work and school from 8am to 8pm so for most of Friday he was fine. But when night came and I wasn't home, Ming was restless. My mom told me he would run up and down the stairs, almost as if looking for me. Finally, at night, he settled upstairs in the den where no one goes to and where he usually never goes to.
The next day, my mom couldn't find him! She looked in all his usual places (which is usually just my room and the couch in the living room). She finally found him in the den upstairs again, behind the TV. She coaxed him to eat but he would not. She did manage to convince him to eat with some treats.
My sister even texted me, telling me, "Ming is so lonely. He's sleeping all day upstairs."
On Sunday, he was a little better. Eating more enthusiastically and even sitting with my mom as she did laundry.
I could not wait to get home on Sunday! During the long car ride home, I fantasized that maybe Ming would greet me at the door, rub against my legs and generally be super excited to see me. I imagined it to be like one of those videos when soldiers would come home and their dogs would greet them with kisses and hugs.
So of course I arrived home with a few expectations and lots of excitement. The moment I walked through the door and before even greeting my parents, I was already calling Ming's name.
I heard no pitter patter or meows. So I went upstairs to my bedroom and spied my cat's tail in the hallway. I called again, "Hey Ming!"
Ming looked at me over his shoulder. Cocked his head in greeting and then turned back to clawing at some box!
Typical cat!
Turns out, he was hunting a spider. My dreams of a heartfelt and emotional reunion - scattered away (much like the spider).
Even though I don't see any change in his behaviour around me, my mother and sister sure did. They said, now that I'm home, Ming is less restless, more at peace and is not hiding all day (he's not much of a hider). It's interesting to think he acts completely different around me and in a way I'll probably never see.
It's experiences like this that let me know that my cat really does love me, even though he is not the cuddly kind or one to solicit pets. It's also moments like this that make it really hard for me to think about going away for more than a day. Even on the first day of camp, I was already missing my cat!
What are some non-conventional ways that your cat shows their love for you?
