I'm new to this but I need help...
I have 2 cats and a puppy, but my concern is for 1 of the cats. I've had him for 13 yes and just in the last few months I've been informed that he has diabetes.
I've been fighting for disability for about 4yrs now. Finances are the ultimate issue here. I found a food for him but its $45 a case (24cans, between 2 cats makes it 12 days of food)
The other cat isn't diabetic but I thought it was easier to feed both the same food cuz they always check out the bowl of the other to see if 1 has something better. The other reason for feeding them the same is that they are from the same litter and I figured that it wouldn't hurt the non diabetic to eat better since he's close to 18lbs himself. They both were raised on Friskies.
But my problem is how to feed them better and stay with in the cost I've been at.
I've eliminated dry food back when he was diagnosed. So that is not a problem. They eat twice a day and I haven't been successful in getting him down to 1/2 a "single serving" can at a feeding. The smallest size is 1 can per feeding to be happy and not YELL an hour later. Please don't get me wrong, I can "tune out" the crying for food but its a mission he's on. When he's not full he whines, runs on front of your feet, if your doing dishes or cooking, he will lay in the middle of the floor so that you HAVE to acknowledge him. Yes, I've picked him up and physically moved him, and before I can get back to whatever I was doing, he's back in your way.
Back to the matter at hand, what is a good can cat food at least close to the price of Friskies that is lowest in carbs and sugar???
I'm ok with ordering online if I can find something that is better for them.

I've been feeding Friskies Canned food, Turkey and Giblets pate, I do not have a diabetic cat. Do you give insulin or not yet? You'll need to be careful with changing food if you're giving insulin.  If you stick with the Friskies, I buy a case of that online, at dollar tree for $1 per 13oz can much more economical than the little tins at the store. I think it will be best for him to be completely off dry food, too much carbs but even so, must use caution. Please ask any Vet before changing food for the diabetic kitty if on insulin.

I've heard others with diabetic cats have had good luck with Fancy Feast pate in turkey giblets, try not to feed anything in gravy/sauce as its with extra carbs because its made with flour. Here is a link to the site I use, Dr. Piersons site, I use her recipe for my FLUTD cat along with canned food. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=felinediabetes

I linked the diabetes section.

Hi, hope other diabetic cat owners can sound in here. I've heard Sheba classic pates are pretty healthy and they're usually about 50¢ a can aty local Walmart. Not sure what kind of food your vet recommends, but if it's special food, you might need to feed your diabetic cat separately. Can you check online to see if it's cheaper? Good luck. It's no fun when things get tight in the wallet. Like I said, I'm sure you will get more advise from diabetic cat owners. Can it ever be reversed with weight loss, like with humans? Sorry I can't be of more help.
