Hello! On May 20th we took our Cat to the vet for what we thought was a blockage, we were correct he was blocked. They immediately went and unblocked him, kept him cathed over right as normal, and released him later the next day. While at the vet he was giving an inj. of Tolfedine 4% and inj. of Convenia, he is also on Hills C/D feline Cans as per her recommendation.  When he came home, he seemed like he was urinating good, and still had blood in his urine which we knew was expected..... He seemed like he was getting better, back to his happy go lucky self, running around being a pain in the butt...

On May 27th, I noticed he was urinating fairly large and occasional small amounts, along with some blood and clots. Called the vet, asked us to come in. Came in, she checked him for a block again, and he was okay. I went in she gave him another shot of Tolfedine 4%, and prescribed him 5 days of Onsior (robenaxoxib)... He still urinating frequently with blood on and off, occasionally he has good amounts of pee.

What's your thoughts on this? They had to use to different Tom Cat catheters on him the 4.5" and the 5.5" because the 4.5 wasn't working.. Is it possible they may have injuried his bladder, and its what is causing the bleeding/clots? OR is it still from him being in pain and the anti-inflammatory may work...

OR should I call another vet? They are all over 2 hours away, and after spending $600, i'm a little frustrated because I feel like our vet is not paying attention to him, nor does she seem very knowledgeable.

We've doubt with our other cat having crystals, luckly he didn't need to be unblocked, so having an unblocked cat is new to me, and not sure what to expect or for how long...

Thanks.
Jess

My cat is going through something similar, I just made a post about it, here's what I said

"

Hello there,

My poor boy, Charlie, about 2 weeks ago had to take an emergency trip to the vet due to a urinary obstruction caused by crystals in his urine/bladder. He was there for 2 nights, and was treated with a catheter, IV fluids, and had his bladder flushed a few times. $1500 later, he came home with Prazosin (7 days) for genital spasms, Meticam (5 days), and an antibiotic (7 days). He got home about a week and a half ago, so he was finished all of his prescribed meds by this past Tuesday morning. He seemed perfectly fine all day Tuesday, all day Wednesday, and up until about 11pm on Thursday. Was his old self, cuddling, playing, eating, drinking, everything. But then all of a sudden last night, he starts frantically running around trying to pee on everything he possibly can, my laundry, in flower pots, on my bed, and there is blood in his urine. A pink tinge to the colour, and he was also passing small clots as well. I immediately called the vet and they prescribed more Prazosin, and a different pain medication for the next 4 days. When i gave both prescriptions to him last night at around midnight, he fell asleep right away, and woke up around 6 this morning, went straight to the litterbox and had what I would call a normal pee (about the size of a deck of cards), and then another one the same size about 2-3 hours later. I gave him a normal meal of the Royal Canin Urinary SO (pate mixed with extra water) this morning, and then another smaller meal at around 2 today. He seemed to be doing a bit better, not as uncomfortable, but just within the past two hours he has been in and out of the litterbox, and only peeing small amounts, about the size of half a golf ball or smaller each time. Will be keeping a very close eye on him tonight, but in the mean time I just wanted to ask this community a few questions...

If your cat has experienced urinary blockage due to crystals before, did they have any reoccurrence within the 2 weeks of coming home from the vet? What was their healing process like?

What kind of diet did you switch them too after the first occurrence of crystals/obstruction? Raw? Canned? Vet prescribed?

Any tips on making my apartment as stress free as possible, as I'm told this problem is greatly linked to stress?

Anyone out there have any happy endings after dealing with this problem with their cats? How did you treat it in the long term? Could definitely use some reassurance at this point

Thank you so much in advance for any responses! Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!!
 "

What kind of food has your kitty been eating? Has he been eating and pooping normally? He may be still having some irritation because of some crystals. Not enough to cause a blockage, but enough to irritate the bladder and urethra, and cause him to has some blood in his urine, and want to pee more frequently. My vet said that that can be a part of the healing process, especially if they aren't really eating/drinking as much as they should when they get home.

Seems very similar. I have a cat litter additive that I bought at Walmart (No idea how well it works) anyways it determines if their urine is acidic or alkaline. Before we took him to the vet it turned REALLY purple meaning Alkaline. Now, his urine comes up as dark green, which is normal. So I feel like as far as a block, he's okay. the vet checked him and he was fine than. he is also eating good and drinking plenty of fluid.

None the less, he too is acting like his normal self, jumping and being a brat. SO maybe it's just part of the healing processes!

Also he's on the Hill Prescription Diet, C/D. Besides being a wet cat food, I can't find anything of important in it, it may have more water.... Once we are done 30 days of this we will be switching to something less. Since I can not afford $48 every week in half (for two cats).  The big thing is to keep them on wet or raw foods that will introduce more water in to their diet.

We had a water fountain drink station for them, but they chew through the cords until it stops working... SO not really....safe lol.

You can always add water to any canned food! I add about 1-2 tbsp. of water to my cat's meals as she only gets canned food. I'll add extra water to some of the really dense pates such as Nature's Variety. She rarely drinks from her water bowl, so this way I know she gets plenty of water :)

A tip I'd like to share for increasing liquid intake, good for all my many cats but especially my 13 yr old Maine Coon, Jamie, who has had urinary tract issues (stress related, we believe, because no infection, no crystals - just a lot of blood and discomfort). I make "kitty broth," using big chicken thigh bones with a bit of meat on them (leftover when we make semi-raw cat food). I use my slow cooker, add water and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of organic apple cider vinegar. Cook forever, remove bones, mush the bits of meat. Freeze in ice cube trays, then store in freezer bags. At meal time, I defrost a cube or two or three and add to canned and homemade food. Commercial broth is a no-no (onion flakes, etc.) and this is not hard to make. Jamie gets the most - sort of like kitty soup. My other cats like it, too.

I also give Jamie cranberry powder and pet wellbeing's Urinary Gold. After a couple occurrences in the same month (last December) and horrifying vet bills, he's had no problems since. I also got him a new toy and make time to give him exercise every day. He is brighter, more energetic, and even lets me brush him now, a first.

Hoping for good outcomes for your fur-babies!

For added water consumption try placing several water bowls around the house and don't use tap water.  We only use RO since you can refill bottles at Whole Foods for 36 cents a gallon.  We feed canned, then they get a second meal with dry kibble that has warm water on it to soften it up a little, plus they lap up the favored water in the bowl.  Hope your kitty recovers from this.
