I have a roommate who's hardly EVER here (dream come true you'd think), but she has a cat in that dark little room of hers. It's bad enough she isn't really around much in this respect, but when she isn't spending the night at her boyfriend house she's going on trips, last one was 8 days. Her boyfriend came by once that I know of and that wasn't for very long. Sometimes it'll think I'm her when I get home and it'll meow to me. It's heartwrenching. My biggest mistake was to try to offer my services (for free of course), I'm a very busy pet sitter. She complained to the landlord and I got chewed out. I guess if she were a nice person she wouldnbe causing this problem. I just think cats are social animals and her coming home at a regular hour everyday would calibrate its time, it's soo dark in their, but she isn't regular. This thing where people have cats cause they can leave them at their leisure is bunk. I'm helpless and horrified, but I need this place badly, I only just recently moved in.... and there's nothing I can do unless I want to get accused of being the problem, which is really wrong. I swear that cat is desperate to be loved, my dog plays under the door with him cuz it's all we can do for him.

How absolutely appalling of your roommate! The poor thing must be very sad and lonely
Thank you so much for caring! I hope that some way this situation can be resolved

Have you talked to her about it? Maybe offer to let him out to socialize for a bit? Is she feeding it and cleaning his box? Just wondering to what extent it's being neglected.

Exactly what I was going to say. This really is animal neglect.

Are you allowed to go in and pet the cat or even feed it or clean the litter box while she is away? It certainly is not fair to the cat to be left closed up alone for days on end. Some would call this neglect, if not abuse.

I get from your post that you are caring, and worried for this cat. I don't blame you. But you are fearful of offering your thoughts, lest you should be asked to move out .

As another poster suggested, perhaps you can simply cheerfully offer your services when she is planning to be away. If she declines, you make a point of insisting that it is no trouble and that it would be your pleasure. And you do this from your heart and never let her know what you really feel. You do this for the cat's sake, and because it is the right thing to do.

Let us know how it's going! :)

PS: What did she report you to the landlord for that got you chewed out? And you said you offered your services. It's not clear in your post if she turned you down or what. This is a very distressing situation!

I just combined my email so I get them all in my most checked email and I saw all these posts wow! It made me feel so reassured I felt so alone with this, but then I immediately thought about poor Bumper (yeah she named him after a car part, lol) . He doesn't get the reassurance of all of you. Iam a pet sitter, dog walker, so it was really an oxymoron that I could not help a cat I live with. The cat stays locked in her room. Talk about no touch no talk no eye contact... but we talk to him through the door. Bullseye my dog was given a kitten as a puppy so he really thought he was gonna have a play buddy when we first moved in. Because I made notice of the cat being neglected and she was running her car exhaust into my bedroom window for like ten minutes before she'd leave in the morning, it all eventually has led to my being given notice because I'm being a squeaky wheel, so I just got greased. I don't know details of how clean box is out how it's feed but prob one of those feeders cuz he's not emaciated. Just sad. I'msorrythere's not going to be a happy ending... it'd be a good episode for My Cat IN Hell...poor baby. We both got greased....

Well, maybe once you leave she will let the cat have the run of the house. At least that would be a positive change for Bumper. It's very sad. I wish you the best as you move on down the road! :)
