My 14 year old cats been having this ongoing problem for years!

It used to be one or two blusish growths in the ear that popped and went away, but over the years my cat has fleshy growths in both her ear canals. I know they grew because when scratched by her nail they bleed but don't go away and it's been so bad she scratches them daily and blood drips on her and splatters when she shakes her head.

Whatever these growths are make her ears clog up with wax quickly instead of allowing the chunks to fall out like normal, and the growths annoy her constantly and when she tries to get the wax out ends up scratching the growths.

I've been to 3 vets and nothing has helped her. All I can do is get her ears cleaned once a month and cuts cauterized, which helps very little wax builds up within two weeks and the growths always bleed.

Unfortunetly I cannot clean her ears or apply cream/ointment, the care she needs I cannot do I tried asking a family member for help and we got nothing accomplished. She's too skittish and fearful.

No vet ever suggested a biopsy. I find that strange seeing how my cat has severe chronic ear issues that aren't being resolved. I finally asked how to diagnose exactly what these growths are, I was told anesthesia and they cut a growth out to biopsy. But this is an issue because that leaves a wound she can reach by scratching. My cat cannot wear the collar, she couldn't ever wear a normal cat collar she chewed for hours non stop without eating or sleeping to get it off, if she had to wear the Elizabeth collar for weeks I don't think she would last long.

The vet told me it could be like moles, from scratching, non cancer tumors, or cancer, and that ear problems like this and growths aren't common in cats which concerns me, and she never had them younger. But said they aren't bothering her so doesn't suggest a biopsy, but they are bothering her!

I'm at my wits end. If it's up to the vet they suggest do nothing but monthly ear cleaning, I know my cat is in constant pain and irritated so that's not good enough for me. If my cat has cancer I want to know!

I was told there's a chance if removed the growths could return, but unless I'm told what they are how can I judge if removal might help? All I can think is if stuff is growing in your ears and causing wax buildup the growths should be removed, to allow more open space and airflow.

Do they not freeze or burn them off instead of cutting? Are all biopsies invasive, blood samples or x Ray of ear won't help?

Oh, my. I have seen this. Years ago, we had a Siamese and she had these growths and so did her son. At the time, we were told this was something that happened a lot to Siamese, but I always suspected it was a kind of growth, a kind of pappiloma . In fact , I think I read somewhere about it being that.

We ended up having surgery on the son, and the last time, the damn vet amputated both ears. There's no way that cat deserved that. Do yourself a favor and go to a good vet, something like U of P vet school, or Cornell, if you can, if not that then I hope you can find a cat-only vet, because it's been 30 years, and I'm sure there have been advances made for this condition.
