Hello, I adopted my cat Merri from Toms River NJ, animal shelter on Jan 30th 2015.  She was obviously an

indoor cat because when ever I would come in door and she was near she would run in opposite direction, afraid

to go out.  Had an issue with her a week later, she cut a place near her little butt and got infected.  Here is a  photo of her recovering from that.

But reason I am writing is on March 11th 2015  I got up around 4AM and didn't hear her meowing to be fed as usual,

thought not too much of it and went back to bed.  Got up around 8AM and she was gone!  The night before, I had locked all windows and doors, pet her goodnight and there was no way she could get out even if she wanted to and as I said she was afraid to go out anyway.  Anyway I was sad for three days and 4 nights , went out at wee hours of morning on what would have been her fourth day being gone... went on side of yard and heard her plaintive "meow" and saw her white bib in neighbors yard on other side of a fence.  I approached and said "there you are" and another cat darted away and ran off , thank God it must have been friendly and there was no fight.  Merri is sweet little cat who had babies at shelter before I adopted her- she was only 2 and 1/2 years old when she had them.

I am posting this to possibly help someone else as I read about "going out in the wee hours" on a cat forum ( not sure if it was this one).  I had gone out calling for her in day time but NO peep or sign.. apparently during day they are too scared to move from hiding,  although I bet she was watching me.

It was still hard to get her, as she ran around the other side of the neighbors house, when I got close!  I thought "Oh, I may never get her this way!"  Finally kneeling in neighbors front yard with a bag of treats , I lured her and then stood up and walked back to my front steps, rattling the bag of treats, finally got her to door and when I opened it she ran in.

I don't like having a cat that is not able to enjoy outside, seems like cat is a prisoner although It is much better than a cage at shelter.  I am trying to put collar , leash and long rope attached to bring her outside and let her run a little and sniff things and nibble grass... so far I can't get all these things on her as she fights it.

I love my Merri.  Here is photo... Can cats walk through wall and/or teleport?  I can't see any other answer for this case!!

The more I read the more confusing your story gets. Did you find her? If so why would you EVER let her out again?

He did find her and lured her home with treats.

Since she was difficult to get back home and didn't come home for several days I would just be careful of taking her out. Once she knows what's out there she might try to slip out the door when you are carrying groceries or something.

Since there was no way she could get out of the house she was obviously abducted by aliens against her will! She might be happier and safer to stay inside anyways :-)

Ah, no alien here, just a very fast cat who slipped out through a door , or who pushed a screen open. Glad she's back!

This cat runs AWAY from open doors! and NO holes in screens... Still a mystery to me, thanks for trying a mundane explanation lol

I will try to take her out on long tether, I feel like she is a prisoner just living whole life as a shut in!!

Maybe try a harness instead of a collar with a long leash. It's less likely that she could wiggle her way out of one. I had a dog once that always got his snug (2 fingers under) collar right off.
