Hi guys,

My cat who's +2 yrs old has been diagnosed recently of UTI and the vet prescribed Prednisolone  syrup (3ml/day for 5 days ) & Proximol effervescent (a local drug here that's advertised to expel ureteric stones & crystals )

My cat was suffering from the usual symptoms of UTI i.e. traces of blood in urine, straining while urinating, frequent trips to the litter box more than usual and the whole 9 yards.

I started administering the medications for him on Saturday my time but the symptoms of UTI persisted nevertheless. A bigger problem however emerged by Sunday evening, the cat starts to suffer from new symptoms:

- He moves less and less now (He became very lethargic)

- Loss of appetite and cessation of drinking water.

- Vomiting to the point that I had to hold off giving the daily Proximol doses to him because he throws up almost instantly after swallowing any liquids in.

- Apparently he didn't defecated since then. (No stool found near the litter box. Could be constipated, I don't know for sure)

- When he walks, he barely holds his balance and seems to me he's dizzy or disoriented.

- Lying most of the time on his side and rarely rolls to the other side or moves his limps like he used to be.

- I am not sure if he could had some sleep the last couple of days or not. His eyes are wide open most of the time when I observe him and he seems to gaze at something like far away and not to mention he is not responding to any of my calls to him or his favorite toys.

- He barely meows now and when he does, he's straining to do it and the sound he makes is almost unintelligible.

- THIS IS THE WORST SYMPTOM SO FAR, this morning I tried to make him ingest some chicken soup to feed him, he threw up and when I brought a towel to clean him up he started to urinate BLOOD. NOT DILUTED BLOOD MIXED WITH URINE JUST A LOT OF BLOOD and it had an AWFUL SMELL. The good thing is it stopped shortly but still the picture of blood coming out of his penis frightening and horrendous. (Note I noticed last night the presence of dry blood stains around his private area and I cleaned it accordingly)

In light of all of this and the worsening conditions, I decided to stop giving him Prednisolone altogether since it's doing him more harm than good at this point but I read some articles that advises against the sudden interruption of Prednisolone as it may mess up his body but it's already wreaking havoc now and making him more sick that he really was. What do you think guys? Is this the right decision?

Also, it is worth mentioning that the vet gave me after he finished his diagnosis of him two shots. He said they were antibiotics and I have not noticed anything wrong with the cat in the first 24 hrs of these shots. So, I'm more inclined to rule out that these shots are the reason of his worsening conditions.

What do you advise me of? Anyone has any idea what is the diagnosis of my cat given these new symptoms?

Any help is appreciated.

I'm no expert here but his condition sounds scary and serious and I would bring cat to emergency vet or at least call, they should help you. Pred in small dose in short time shouldn't cause problem to stop from what I experienced. I know you must be careful with interactions. Dr should know though. I would call a vet and describe every detail right away. Ive never had a cat with this condition so can't say it's part of infection. Still at least talk to vet.

As the others say, I think he's become a veterinary emergency, and needs help fast. Do let us know what happens.
