I'm extremely concerned for my cat Clementine.

I've had Clem since he was about 5 weeks old. His mother was killed in traffic, and the person who found the kittens rehomed them quickly, which is why I got him so young. He's now 9 months old.

He's always been a very alert, active, playful and friendly guy who doesn't like being held but loves to be pet. He's been my shadow since the day I brought him home, and he's usually fearless. His only behaviour issue previously was his love of aggressive, rough and tumble play but that wasn't a real problem. He's never had any litter box issues, and though he's chatty he isn't fussy.

A few days ago (Tuesday, 19th May) I brought him in for his neuter (castration). He stayed overnight in the vet clinic and came home mid-day Wednesday. He was unhappy in the vet office but sleepy and calm when he got home. He was on pain medication (Onsior) for two days: Wednesday and Thursday but nothing after that. However, yesterday (Saturday the 23rd) he started exhibiting a lot of weird symptoms. He displayed rippling skin like he was being bitten and frantically bit/licked his arms, legs, back and tail. He would run around and then hide in the pantry, which he never bothered to go into before. He would then get up, dart around, bite, scratch, lick and run back to hide. It went on for about four hours. Afterwards he was very withdrawn and sulky, hiding away again. This is a cat who has slept every single night next to me.

Today, I noticed a large wound on his thigh. It looks fresh, and since he's an indoor guy I'm worried it did it to himself. He's had a couple brief (5-10 minute) episodes of the skin rolling thing but not like last night. I'm wondering if this could be a response to stress caused by the neuter or the overnight separation (he'd never been away from me that long before, and as I work from home he's rarely alone longer than 3-4 hours at a time). Also, if he could be allergic to the anesthesia, the Onsior or his microchip (he was chipped at the procedure time). I'll be looking into the vet but Clementine has gone to the vet very often in his life, because he had a tiny heart murmur when he was little, and he's had all vaccinations, regular testing, etc. He did have a faecal evaluation Tuesday so no worms or internal parasites.

* I've lived in the same apartment since adopting him, so no issues with moving. It's always just been him and I, so no new people/animals and none moving away or passing on.

* He's indoors, but we occasionally go out on the 4th floor deck together. However he never leaves the deck and only encounters wild animals through the window (sometimes squirrels or raccoons come up on the deck, but he's never allowed to be out when they are).

The symptoms sound a lot like feline hyperesthesia syndrome http://www.vetinfo.com/feline-hyperesthesia-syndrome.html  but it seems like a really bizarre coincidence for it to appear right after being neutered.  Very little is really known about the disease including the cause so I guess it is possible that it could be a reaction to the anesthetic.
