Hello, I wonder if anyone can help. My mum's cat is absolutely gorgeous and now that I'm looking for my own cat, I want to find one just like him!

Can anyone tell me what type he is?

Look into the Maine Coon.  If you by any reason dont afford with a purebred, there are quite a few of almost look alikes.

If a purebred is important for you, you can try and find for example, a breeding queen or stud, who is retired from active breeding career.

Or a purebred, whose owner by some reason must seek a new home for it....

Another bred to look into, may be the Siberian.

Thanks for your suggestions Stefan.

I'd be interested to know whether you think he might just be a 'normal' long-haired cat? I've seen a few kittens that look like they may grow up to look like Oscar (the cat in the pic) but would like to be sure.

If you want to be sure, the only way is to get a purebred...   :)   Preferably from a serious breeder, with  Pedigree certifikate and everything.

observe, Maine Coon are usually noticeably bigger than other cats, Siberians and Norwegian Forest cats are also clearly bigger than average.

You didnt told clearly if  the cat on pics is BIG or if he is average size.   If big, there is a good chance he is more or less a real MCO.

But if you are happy with a look alike domestic, but want it to be as alike as possible, opt for an adult or almost adult cat.  Where you do see the result...

With kittens who arent pure bred, you really dont know how they will be as adult, you are always taking some chance.

But in the last stand - when you say, go to a shelter to look see if you find something interesting, in the end its usually not you who choose, its one of the cats whom chooses you.  You become the Chosen one.

A couple of other possibilities is; contact some rescuer groups around, they do surely have cats, fostered and waiting for a permanent home.  These ex-semiferales will be somewhat shy, esp to visitors, but its rewarding with a shy cat.  You KNOW when he is giving you its trust and love, its not because its thursday today, but because you have earned his trust and love...

Another possibility is to visit the local high kill pound.   The cats there know they are in the death row.   And know to show their gratitude to their adopter...

Sorry for the rant, I hope you find some wisedom among  these words anyway.    :)
