This is our 14 week old kitten, a Maine Coon/Bengal cross. We're puzzling over the wolf head on his shoulders and the downward stripe from his neck to his tail with the cross-stripe. Can anyone please explain how exactly we'd describe his markings?

How sure are you on the mix?  IS it his real ancestry, or its someones invention "perhaps maybe"?

Anyways, the pattern as such is essentially a classical tabby, called also for blotched, or marbled .

The spots on the tummy is something quite common on striped and classical tabbies, so it really doesnt count.  But if these same spots were elsewhere, you could prob be counted as spotted...    The wold or heart sign on his shoulders seems to be quite common.  I hadnt thought on it earlier much, but I saw the other day in a tread ablut found strays, a couple of them saw this heart shape on their found strays....

I hope othere  will chime in, and I will also  page two of our forumites, whom are good at patterns and colors.

@GemsGem   @Biancavd

Good luck!   @Caffoy

That doesn't actually help as I saw his parents and siblings. Here are the parents - she's a Bengal with papers and he's a Maine Coon with papers.

What else did you wished??

Mom isnt visible, the dad is a classical tabby him too.  I think being mackerel striped tabbies is the common among MCO.

Anyway, unless mom says anything else, its from dad the tabby comes - tabby is dominant.

So despite the registration papers of both parents, you're telling me they're just tabby cats? on what grounds are you discrediting the papers? I just asked for help with the markings, not for you to discredit my animal and his parents.

Stefan isn't trying to discredit the papers of the parents - he gave you the answer based on his knowledge, and that is based on your cats markings (fur description). Regardless of what breed he is or what his parents are papered as, he is described as a black classic tabby. Likewise, his father would be described as a tabby by markings, in addition to being a maine coon by breed. His initial line is just asking whether or not you know for a fact what the parents are because SO many cats are the result of mixed breed/mutt/moggy cats and are only described as certain breeds by speculation.

Wikipedia actually describes the misconception well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabby_cat
A tabby, also known as grey tiger, is any domestic cat that has a coat featuring distinctive stripes, dots, lines or swirling patterns, usually together with a mark resembling an 'M' on its forehead. Tabbies are sometimes erroneously assumed to be a cat breed.[1] In fact, the tabby pattern is found in many breeds, as well as among the general mixed-breed population. The tabby pattern is a naturally occurring feature that may be related to the coloration of the domestic cat's direct ancestor, the African wildcat, which (along with the European wildcat and Asiatic wildcat) has a similar coloration.

Right, exactly as said above, tabby is a pattern, not a breed...   And we were talking about patterns, no?

As you had proofs the parents are purebred, and the kitten thus a mix from two purebred parents, there was nothing more to discuss there.   :)

I agree with StefanZ, Biancavd, and pinkdagger have said here - you have a beautiful classic black tabby cat here.  His fur has a fabulously glossy look which I assume comes from his parents given that Bengal's have amazingly glossy fur and the photo of dad above also shows a stunning coat much more glossy than any Maine Coon I have seen - even at cat shows here.   I was trying to figure out your comment about having a wolf head on his shoulders @Caffoy, thinking the poor guy looks like a cat to me, and then I saw it!!!   Wow, it really does look like a wolf head.
    The downward stripes on his spine and then circles on his flanks are classic tabby but the stripes are very symetrical which is quite unusual I think, and lovely to look down upon.  The wolf head is quite unique, a little quirk of nature perhaps and hopefully no indication of his purrsonality - which looks to be inquisitive and bold in your pictures.
