I am new to the forum and wanted to post and get advice on my current situation.

I have my own female cat who is 8 years old. Just today, I took in my brothers cat who is also a female and is also 8 years old (he is moving and is unable to take her with him). I was not expecting to take her in but I could not bear the thought of her going to a shelter. I was actually trying to help him find a home for her before he left but no one wanted to take her in..whether it be they have too many animals or they would tell me, "I will pass the word around". Then I would follow up with those who said this, and get no response.

Currently, I have my brothers cat in a play cage upstairs with all she needs and keep her separate from my cat. My cat is already becoming curious and is trying to get into the upstairs bedroom.

I have an extremely small apartment where it might get very hard to keep them separate as my cat basically "owns" the whole apartment. And is set in her ways. Both cats never lived with another cat before either.

What has your experience been introducing 2 older cats? Also, what would you suggest in order to make them both comfortable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good for you for taking in this cat!  Wish I could offer some advice, but I'm in a similar situation.  I just adopted a senior female cat who's been an only cat her whole life.  I need to integrate her with my younger male cat and dog.  I've been reading the integration threads and trying to learn the best way to go about it.  Good luck.  Sounds like you're doing the right things so far.

With adult/senior cats, it's hard to give advice on introductions. every cat is unique and each situation is different. It sounds like you are aware this is difficult on them and you are concerned about it, which is the best thing for the situation. Keep looking at old threads and give it time, it will take awhile

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I just did an exchange of items yesterday (gave a mat with my cats scent to the new cat and a mat the new cats been laying on to my cat). At first, the new cat hissed at it so I left her alone with it for a few. I went back upstairs after those few minutes and she was laying on it. My cat sniffed out the new cats mat and she did that for a good 10 minutes. Eventually, she ended up laying next to it.

It has been a week since we took the cat in so we might try and introduce them soon since they reacted okay to each others mats.
