I have a great companion, a beautiful grey female, Ailyn. I also have a wonderful female, Catdubh. Everyday I give them a dish of fresh water. I myself drink the water filtered because I don't like the taste of tap. About 1 week ago, Ailyn began drinking out of my water glass. I find her with her head bent over it and just lapping up the water. I haven't seen her drink out of her bowl, I have seen Catdubh. I thought maybe she didn't like the taste, so I switched to filtered water. That hasn't deterred her, she still drinks out of my water glass. I have used water bottles in the past, but prefer glass. Is there something that might be wrong? There is nothing else that is different about her behavior, she is still a wonderful companion to me, and a total jerk to Catdubh. Hahaha! Appreciate any ideas.

Nothing unusual about her behavior. I am sure she drinks from her bowl when you are not looking.

ya as AtrophyAnnie  for sure its drinking while you are not looking...

look in the cat world I think cats do whatever they like...

if they like drinking from your cup they will

but if you "for example" kicked it out in a hot summary day..

it will not wait for your cup to drink from
... they drink water when they are thirst... from any water source
...

"as long as they know its place"

so make sure to hide your cup of water for few days...

and try put the water right beside the food source they eat from...

Most cats tend to drink more when their food and water bowls aren't next to each other. In the wild those sources wouldn't be, and cats follow their natural instincts.

Some cats simply prefer to drink out of glasses, and some caregivers leave glasses sitting around for that reasob. As long as it's just water it isn"t a problem. Our last cat liked to drink my husband"s (fortunately alcohol-free) beer, and my parents had a cat that was crazy about coffee. You had to keep your hand over your cup or use one with a lid.

You could try giving her her own glass of water, but she'll probably still prefer yours. :lol3:

My cat is like yours. Won't drink from his bowl, but likes to drink from my cup. He also likes distilled water (what I drink) and not tap water. I gave him a "bait cup" -- a special cup just for him. When he comes for snuggles and if I see he wants to drink from my cup, I'll offer him the "bait cup" and he'll lap it up. My cup remains safe, and he thinks he got to drink from my cup. Win win.

I have a cat that has her own glass.  I keep it for her in the kitchen window above the sink.  Easier to keep it filled there and its one of her favorite spots to sit.  She no longer drinks from her human's glasses.

my 15 year-old Kitty stopped drinking out of her bowl about 4 years ago and refused to drink out of anything but my glass. After awhile I just gave up and since then she has her own water glass that she drinK's out of that I leave on my bedside table

Mouse will occasionally drink from his bowl - if he has to.  He likes dripping taps best of all and when our water supply was off for about 15 hours a few days back he went round each tap systematically throughout the period and was quite desperate he couldn't get a drink.  He wouldn't touch his bowl the whole time....
When the water came back on he was lappiing away at the drips for about an hour apparently.   He loves to slurp from any cup or glass I have on my bedside table so I never take a drink from anything I have left sitting there, or anywhere else in the apartment either for that matter.  I'm lucky in that he won't touch anything other than water, and hates coffee so much I can't put a used cup down before he's scratching about and telling me to go put it in the sink to wash up.  He seemed to particularly like one glass I used for my bedtime water so I set that aside for him a few weeks back and guess what?   Now that glass seems to be just as unappealing as his original bowl!  I swear he knows when something is mine and it's like the grass is always greener, or steeling is always more fun.
Same as he can sense which bits of paper are valuable / essential documents he's not allowed to chew on and they're always the ones he pulls out of the pile first.

When blighty first came - 2 months and just of the streets - he liked my orange juice and would drink quite a lot and I finished what he left sorry MServant!..;-)
eventually he stopped drinking my OJ.
my vet told me if I have filter water not to give tap water. So I don't.

Some of my cat-water theories :

Maybe cats can see the water level better in a glass,

or they do not have to strain their neck with a glass,

or, they like the taste the glass imparts (I know this one because I only really enjoy coffee from Styrofoam cups)!

I know Speedy now enjoys drinking from a pail in the bathroom and a stainless steel large pan I leave in the bathtub!  She has a water fountain but prefers to use these two items instead!

With the hot weather coming, however, I think I will also leave out a glass in the kitchen!

The pale in the bath is real class!   Mouse is happy lapping up the soapy water from the base of the bath and draining the tap drips dry so thankfully no pale in my bath for me to get my feet stuck in.

You prefer coffee from styrofoam cups? Well, that's a novel preference!   Most people I know won't drink from anything other than glass or porcelain - talk about difficult  (and boring).
