I have a 13 year old cat named Dusty that has discharges from the eyes sometimes and runny nose. I heard that this is contagious but none of my other cats have this problem only his litter mate some times will get watery eyes and a runny nose.

I am trying to get together some L-Lysine and some Terramycin for my boy.

I think their breed is Maine Coon for these two cats. None of my other 3 cats have any signs of this problem.

How long has this been going on for?  How frequently as well?

I had my husband look in a local store for the terramycin ointment and L-Lysine and he could not find either one. I am on limited funds until after the holiday. Any suggestions

He has had it for several years now but might happen when the weather changes maybe 3 or 4 times a year it gets bad. None of the other cats have the same kind of issues as bad as dusty.

As none of the other kids get the same problems and I have 5 other cats all over the age of 10 years. I figure it must be a cold or non contagious. I have read that the herpes virus is contagious.

what store? lysine can be found at about any pharmacy (although not necessarily in every form). and a pet stores, such as petco or petsmart, should at least have lysine treats and maybe even lysine powder or paste.

It does sound like herpes. I have a cat who tested positive for herpes and she has a lot of complications from it. I also have 3 other cats who have never shown any symptoms. Have your cats been vaccinated? The F4 vaccine (sometimes called feline distemper vaccine) actually includes the active form of feline herpes called feline viral rhinotracheitis. I always assumed since my other cats are vaccinated they most likely won't catch it.

All of my cats have had their shots until a couple of years ago when I went on disability. They were all adults and never went outside. Hopefully after the end of next month I will have more finances to get my kids caught up on their shots.

I think I have a location to get the shots without having to visit the Vet. I will check next week.

cats only need most vaccinations every 3 years, possibly even less often.

All the cats I received due to my clients passing. Dusty and his litter mate Smokey in 2002, and Pepper in 2010 had been vaccinated. I have a veternary supply place that I got feline distemper and gave that to my cats in 2008 or 2009.

Dusty normally does not sneeze either. maybe once in a while my cats will sneeze but not much. I will see what I can find locally. I looked online for the terramycine and it was 25.00 which will ahve to wait until payday.

If it's allergies the Lysine won't help much.  I fostered/adopted a kitten recently and the rescue group told me she might have the herpes virus but when the vet saw her he said no.  Anyways per the rescue group I was giving her the Lysine and she still sneezed.  She hasn't been sneezing since my allergies eased up.

My cat doesn't sneeze and as the same time my allergies act up her will get a snotty nose and sometimes he will get discharges from his eyes. This will only last a few days the no more discharges.

I have a source to get the F4 as soon as I get the money. As that is not a vet required shots I can give it myself.

I am trying to make sure what to help him feel better.
