She had her babies this morning. I wanted to video her, and update as it went along. But I didn't want to leave her.
Been awhile since I've read Interview With a Vampire, since it's been raining so much...I decided to re-read. Fell asleep on the sofa.
My husband came in and woke me up before he left for work, Gigi followed...she normally does that in the morning when he forgets
to feed her. But he did feed her, he said she ate a few bites then jumped down. Dale said she laid down on the pillow beside his head last night
and 'stroked' his hair until he fell asleep. Aw, so sweet. I've never seen her do that, he has long, soft hair...probably more of a comfort for her.
He's getting ready to leave for work and she just sat in front of me, meowing. I stood up and she didn't move for me to follow her so I took the initiative
and led her down the stairs. Maybe it's time. As I reached the bottom of the steps, I could see something wet on the floor, then I watched her as she passed
me by and noticed the hair under her tail was wet. Yep, it's time! She jumped on my bed first. I took my dogs up and outside, told my husband to leave them
out when he left.
I went back down, she jumped off the bed and went into the closet under the stairs. I put the nesting box so far back, the light was too dim to reach inside.
I hated to disturb her, but I wanted to make sure things went well and comfort her if she needed it. I pulled her closer to the opening and could see her have a contraction.
She never licked her belly, never meowed after going downstairs. She just kept moving from side to belly, to other side in her box. Every few minutes, she would have a contraction.
They began to get closer, and after a half hour, the first one came. She just looked up at me, I rubbed her head...she purred, but never moved, never meowed either. A low growl, sometimes,
is all I ever heard from her...start to finish. I finally moved the baby (using a clean washcloth blanket) over to her, and she began cleaning it. Not right away though, and the baby was hardly
moving. I had to watch the feet closely to see any movement. No sound either. Inside I was freaking out, eventually Gigi did what was needed...finally eating the afterbirth and cleaning the baby.
The second baby came out, Gigi was immediate in giving attention. It meowed loud and often. This one is going to be full of personality!
An hour and a half after this all started, so far, there are three little babies and all are drinking from mama. Phew.
I can't describe how I feel after watching this beautiful event. Such peace, calm, and love. I brought in the dogs...they were laying by the closet under the stairs, as if they are protecting
her and the babies. The larger of my dogs won't let the Chihuahua too close, and my Chihuahua seems very accepting of this.
Congratulations! Three precious babies! Sounds like she waited for you to be with her. Glad to hear all babies are nursing well too. Welcome to kitten-land!
And now there are five! I can't believe it! Two black kitties, and three grays. They are sooo adorable, OMG! Gigi is a good momma and it's her first litter.
She came back upstairs for the second time, and no way did I think she had another. I wet an old pillow case with cold water, used antibacterial soap on it and rinsed it thoroughly before I held it to her backside.
She started purring so I knew it felt good to her. Hard for her to bend over and clean, so I tried to gently help her. I didn't use any pressure really. Just held It to her, every so often I would wipe down. I'm writing all of this in detail thinking it may help someone else in a similar situation. Not that I know what I'm doing, trial and error I guess. So far, so good.
Anyway, I thought I should check her nesting box. I really didn't expect another, so I was pretty shocked to see another black kitty.
Talk about a full house! Guess we'll be needing more litter boxes in another month or so. I'm so, so, so, so, so happy today~!
Yes she did! So precious. I can't wait for my husband to get home so I can take pictures when he pulls them into the light. Until then, I just want to let her rest.
I'm reading I shouldn't be bothering them at all during the first week as long as they seem to be thriving, and probably not much after that. I think Gigi will let me know
when it's ok. She seems to trust me enough.
About a month ago I took a large box and put pastel wallpaper in it, and decorated it like a nursery by taping oval prints of famous cat baby and border across the top...lol.
She didn't use that box.
Just the plain old Rubbermaid box, my husband told me that would happen. Ha!
Gigi spends a little time with them, but seems to want to be in the same room with humans for the most part. I have sight checked on the kitties a few times
and they are huddled together, sleeping. I'm assuming they are being fed and are ok. Is this normal?
Gigi seems to be doing better today, she's young and a first time mommy. Her appetite is good.
From everything I've read, I thought Gigi would be spending the majority or all of her time with the newborns. For the first 6 hours or so, she stayed with them unless she needed me to see that another had arrived.
I almost feel like Gigi is celebrating not being pregnant anymore, she's having too much fun around the house now and being away from kitties. She isn't neglecting them all the time...I do see her go inside the closet under our stairs on occasion. My concern meter has only slightly risen.
At first I kept leading her back to the closet, then I actually put her in the nesting box a couple of times. She will jump out, pass me up to lay on the carpet and start cleaning herself. I'll go back upstairs and she'll follow like she wants something that I'm not giving her.
Last night, she kept coming into the family room and meowing. I first check on the kittens, then her food and water, and when I am sure there is nothing she needs...I just lay on the floor beside her. Maybe she just wants to be reassured?
This morning, she's back to aggravating the dogs, playing with her balls on the floor, the phone cord, and doesn't seems to be distressed. So I'm not worried about her at all, just the babies...or do they need the bonding time like humans do?
My cat was too. The more I think about it, she was likely either in heat and bothering my neighbor...or someone dumped her on our road after she had mated.
It doesn't matter, I'm older and have always loved animals. I never had a cat for some reason and lucked out with Gigi. I didn't write this, but Gigi's belly dropped
a couple of days before she had the kittens. Seemed low to the ground and a little further back.
