Does anyone know anything about flushing cats' eyes with boric acid ??
In the Turkish cat forum, someone wrote that the vet. gave her boric acid to flush her cats' eyes & told that it doesn't do any harm to the eyes. I don't know why but it doesn't sound right to me !

That doesn't sound right to me either. I'm no expert, but anything with the word "acid" in it should not go in anyone's eyes! I've heard of using boric acid for pest control I think. It'll be interesting to hear the responses to this one!

A lot of breeders use it for cats with weepy eyes to clear the staining. My vet along with a few others would not recomend doing this. Yes it can damage the eye!!

Hi, I have found the answer finally.

I have learned that boric acid, when diluted, is used as an astringent & a topical antiseptic. Also weak solutions are used in eye washes to soothe, refresh & clean irritated eyes & to remove foreign materials from the eye. For example Collydrium (Bausch & Lomb) is an over the counter eye wash which contains boric acid. But it is not something medical; that is, it doesn't treat any underlying problem.

I have been mixing boric acid and warm water and applying it to my cat's eye b/c it is clear running water and the eye is closed.  I have been applying the mix to his eye for a few days, should I continue w/this treatment.  He has been senn by a vet 2xs and giving Tomicyn for a scratch which healed but now.....

The post you are replying to is over 10 years old so it is best to start your own thread. I believe boric acid is used by some breeders but I personally would only use eye cleaners given by the vet. Warm water is very effective in cleaning eyes. It also sounds like your kitty may have feline herpes or a URI and l-lysine is a great supplement to help with that. Here is some info on URIs  (http://healthypets.mercola.com/site...omes-of-respiratory-diseases-in-pet-cats.aspx) and on feline "pink eye" (http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/08/08/chlamydophila-in-cats.aspx)
