Hi everyone :-)
I have a four year old cat, Louie who was diagnosed with kidney disease. Long story short, what the vet explained to me is that he has a narrow urethra, and is prone to crystals. He has had one blockage and has come close two other times. The first vet suggested I put him down. Needless to say I got a second opinion. The vet I have now put him on Royal Canin Urinary SO. She said that she has never had a cat reblock on this food, and that if he doesn't eat it he will need surgery once he reblocks. At the time I didn't question it, but I'm wondering if there are other better foods out there for him. I know the vets office sells the royal Canin so I don't know if that is why she so strongly advised it or if it really is the best. His health and well being is my primary concern.

Has anybody else been in this situation? What food do you feed?

Thank you !

These prescription foods are out there for a reason.  I agree with detmut and would continue on this food if I had a cat that was prone to blockages.  But as also mentioned, as long as your have a prescription, you should be able to procure this food via the internet.  'Course, that may not be viable depending on what country you live in.

Does he really have kidney disease, or is he just prone  to blockages?  Two different things, in my mind.  With kidney disease, the kidney do not function at full capacity, and there is a completely different food needed for that.  But in your cat's case, probably the s/o would still be best.
