Are there any good web resources you've seen for basic tips for arranging furniture in a tight space -- e.g rentals with awful layouts? I'm moving soon and it's a pain trying to figure out where to place the furniture so that it looks home-ly and not silly.

If you would like to help, I have lots of cookies too.

There are actually very few online. Most, you have to pay for.  The one or two I've come across are buggy, and not very intuitive to use.

You may want to check out the Houzz website for advice.  They have a nice community over there and you can post a photo of the room and ask for ideas from members. Any time I've used it, I've had a ton of people help out.

Or try going to a bookstore (yes! a bookstore!) and find books on interior design.  I have a great book on decorating small spaces which was helpful for me years ago while in a studio on NYC. Small spaces are tough. The best way to arrange furniture is to try and create smaller dedicated areas for yourself.  Don't line furniture up against walls if possible either - a couch will look better usually if floated in the room.  And contrary to believe, you can use large pieces as long as you don't over clutter the area.  I had my couch dividing the space, so it created a living area and a dining/kitchen area.  As long as nothing blocks the passage between one area and another, it should be fine.  Tripping over stuff is the worst!

It's old-school, but I've always used graph paper, generally 1 square = 1 foot. Just draw the outline of the room and cut out the larger pieces of furniture and move around to arrange. It would be easier on the computer, but this way it's only the cost of a couple of pieces of graph paper. You could print out some graph paper from the web if you don't have any.

Another idea is to separate the sectional, but it may look weird since the "2-seater" would have only one armrest and the "3-seater" would have a backrest cushion in place of an armrest.
