I few months ago I was considering buying ferret, and in the process of getting supplies prepared, I bought EVO ferret food. Midway in the preparation process, I decided to get a kitten instead (it wasn't a rush decision! I waited a couple months and did my research!) I now have a beautiful 10 1/2 week old Russian Blue named Tesla!

Tesla's breeder was feeding him Science Diet kitten food, and since I just got him last week, I'm keeping him on that while he adjusts. However, I'd like to transition him over to some higher quality kitten food. I know the EVO ferret food is just fine for cats, but is it something I can give my kitten? Or should I just toss the food? (A bummer since I live in Tokyo so EVO food is quite expensive!)

I personally would not feed the ferret food. Ferrets have different nutritional needs from cats. In a pinch the ferret food could be fed but long term your cat will likely develop nutritional deficiencies. Can you get Science Diet canned and feed that until you can get some better quality food?

I'm not familiar with what brands are available in Japan. I know there is one active member who lives in Japan. Perhaps she can suggest some good brands. It's member Norachan.

I'd feed it. Ferrets can safely be fed food designed for kittens, so logically the reverse should be true. EVO ferret food is high in protein, low in carbs, free of grains AND potato, and has the same amount of taurine added as their cat food. I wouldn't be surprised if its the same cat food in a different package, just go online and compare the guaranteed analysis on the 2. I'd bet my next paycheck on it. My 2 cents

Evo ferret food is the same thing as Evo cat food. The cat food is cheaper so I buy it for my ferret :D. It is the same---check the ingredients and guaranteed analysis.

Ferrets are obligate carnivores even more than cats are. So anything that's good for them is good for cats, although not all cat foods are good enough for ferrets (not all ferret foods are good for ferrets either; have to do your research, can't trust the marketers :/). But Evo is a good food.

I haven't looked, but I'm sure @Willowy is correct. If it were me, I'd probably opt to mix a small amount of the ferret food with the regular EVO cat/kitten food (say 1 tablespoon ferret food per 1 cup of cat/kitten food), only because I'm overly cautious but I'd still like to be able to use up the ferret food.

I'd feed it too so as not to waste it. Interesting to know they're basically the same!
I once bought a couple of cans of dog food because they were on sale and so much cheaper than the cat food. I just mixed it up with their regular cat food over a couple of weeks and they were fine.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! It looks like they are indeed the same food... Just repackage! Good to know that I don't need to let it go to waste!
