My cat loves canned chicken cat food. We try to mix things up for him, but feed him mostly poultry canned food. Sometimes, we'll also feed him canned seafood or fish ones. We feed him Blue Buffalo.
I've had my cat since March and I am just now noticing a pattern. He doesn't like the beef food as much as the poultry ones. Also, it seems that seafood upsets his stomach (so he won't be fed that any more).
These symptoms seem to coincide with eating fish for him- bowel movements that are unbelievably strong smelling (no diarrhea though), and though he's normally a very clean cat, he'll start neglecting his bottom, random loud meowing and sometimes gas that has a similar effect to the bowel movements I just mentioned.
My cat is about a year old. I Googled whether fish allergies are common in cats and I got results about this being a problem mostly for older cats.
I have also read that variety isn't important in cats diets if they're eating canned food, just that it should be high protein, grain free, etc.
So, I'm wondering, if I feed my cat almost exclusively a grain free, high quality chicken canned food with occasional other poultry flavors like turkey and duck, will this most likely meet his nutritional needs in the long run? Also, is a seafood sensitivity very uncommon in younger cats like mine?
